Sheffield Wednesday is no longer owned by Dejphon Chansiri. US consortium Arise Capital Partners completed its takeover on 2 May 2026, and the English Football League confirmed the new ownership that day. The issue that threatened the sale was how the EFL’s insolvency rules would apply to the club’s unsecured creditors—and whether that would trigger another 15-point deduction.
Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
Arise Capital Partners bought Sheffield Wednesday in May 2026, ending Chansiri’s ownership. The club announced the completed acquisition on 2 May, and the EFL confirmed the change of ownership. BBC Sport reported the completion and the EFL’s decision; the EFL statement confirmed the new ownership.
What issue held up the takeover?
The dispute concerned the amount the proposed deal would return to unsecured creditors after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration. EFL insolvency rules linked the level of creditor repayment to the risk of a further points deduction. In March 2026, while Arise was the preferred bidder, BBC Sport reported that its offer was below the repayment threshold associated with avoiding a 15-point sanction.
According to BBC Sport’s 20 March 2026 report, Arise’s proposed offer was just under £20 million and was understood to produce a return of about six pence for each pound owed to unsecured creditors. The report said the relevant threshold being discussed was 25 pence in the pound. At that point, the potential deduction and spending restrictions were concerns, not settled outcomes.

Why the creditor figures mattered
BBC Sport reported that Chansiri had a £63.1 million directors’ loan claim and was the largest unsecured creditor, while total unsecured debts were reported at £69.7 million. These were figures reported during the March 2026 negotiations; they should not be read as a current balance sheet or independently verified financial statement.
The repayment question mattered because a further points penalty could have affected the club’s League One prospects and the terms on which a buyer would take over. The Supporters’ Trust vice-chair, James Silverwood, warned at the time that strict application of the rules could threaten the club’s ability to attract investment. That was his view during negotiations, not a settled finding about the club’s ability to secure investment.

What changed when Arise completed the purchase?
The feared further 15-point deduction was not imposed. BBC Sport reported that the EFL waived it after considering proposals made to Chansiri by the joint administrators and the new ownership. The league’s decision meant the March concern did not become the final outcome.
At the time of the takeover, BBC Sport also reported that Wednesday would remain under budget restrictions for the next two seasons, while still being permitted to sign players. Those conditions describe the position reported at completion; any later changes would depend on subsequent club or EFL announcements.

How the sale unfolded
- 24 October 2025: Sheffield Wednesday entered administration. The Supporters’ Trust said this ended Chansiri’s ownership and described a fan-led takeover proposal as a contingency if no suitable sale emerged. That was the Trust’s public position.
- 20 March 2026: BBC Sport reported Arise Capital Partners as preferred bidder and raised the creditor-repayment issue, with a further 15-point deduction among the possible consequences.
- 2 May 2026: The club announced that Arise had completed its acquisition. The EFL confirmed the new ownership and said it would not impose the further 15-point penalty.
What to take from the story
