Scopely owns Pokémon GO. The deal was not a sale of Pokémon GO alone: Scopely agreed to acquire Niantic’s games business in March 2025, and the transaction closed on May 29, 2025. Scopely is wholly owned by Savvy Games Group.
Who owns Pokémon GO now?
Pokémon GO is part of Scopely’s games business. Savvy Games Group’s May 29, 2025 announcement confirmed that it had completed the acquisition of Scopely for $3.5 billion and described Scopely as its wholly owned entity. Savvy said it had acquired Scopely in 2023. Savvy Games Group’s closing announcement confirms the corporate relationship and completion date.
What did Scopely buy from Niantic?
The transaction covered Niantic’s games business, not all of Niantic and not just Pokémon GO. Scopely’s March 12, 2025 announcement listed these included games and services:
- Pokémon GO
- Pikmin Bloom
- Monster Hunter Now
- Campfire
- Wayfarer
Scopely said Niantic’s games team would join the company. Niantic’s technology platform was described as spinning off into a separate company, Niantic Spatial, which would continue to own and operate Ingress Prime and Peridot. The transaction therefore separated the games business acquired by Scopely from the technology business retained by Niantic Spatial. Scopely’s March 2025 announcement describes the agreement and the planned spin-off.

When did Scopely buy Pokémon GO, and for how much?
There are two important dates. Scopely announced a signed agreement on March 12, 2025; that agreement was subject to customary closing conditions. Savvy later confirmed that the acquisition closed on May 29, 2025.

How large was the games business?
Scopely’s 2025 announcement offered several company-reported figures to describe the business’s scale. They are not presented here as independently audited or independently verified metrics.
- Niantic’s games business had more than 30 million monthly active players and generated more than $1 billion in revenue in 2024, according to Scopely.
- More than 100 million unique people played Pokémon GO in 2024, according to Scopely.
- Scopely said two million Pokémon GO Fest tickets were sold in 2024.
These figures are attributed to Scopely’s announcement, rather than treated as independent measurements. The announcement is the source for the company’s stated figures.

What has changed since the acquisition?
In a 2026 update, the official Pokémon GO team said the Niantic games team had updated its name to Scopely Explore. The same update said the Pokémon GO team remains the same and reaffirmed its commitment to Trainers. That is the team’s statement about continuity; it should not be read as a guarantee about every aspect of future game operations. Read the Pokémon GO team’s update.
The acquisition announcements and this later team update establish the ownership change and the team’s stated continuity. They do not, by themselves, show that the acquisition caused any particular gameplay, feature, or monetization change.

What did the companies say about the deal?
Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke described the partnership as a way to provide long-term support and investment for the games, calling them “forever games” that could endure for future generations. That was Hanke’s rationale for the deal, not a contractual guarantee about a game’s lifespan or future support.
Pokémon GO senior vice president Ed Wu said the mission remained “to inspire people to discover Pokémon in the real world together.” These statements explain the companies’ publicly stated intentions; they are distinct from the confirmed facts that the deal closed and Scopely now owns the games business.
