Scopely completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic’s games business on May 29, 2025. That business includes Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, Wayfarer, and associated teams and live experiences. Scopely is owned by Savvy Games Group, which the Public Investment Fund identifies as PIF-owned—so the ownership chain connects the games business to Saudi Arabia’s PIF, but does not mean the Saudi government directly operates Pokémon GO.
What happened, and when did the deal close?
Scopely announced on March 12, 2025, that it had agreed to acquire Niantic’s games business for $3.5 billion. It later reported that the transaction closed on May 29, 2025. The distinction matters: the March announcement described a signed agreement; the May announcement confirmed completion.
Scopely’s announcement named Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, and Wayfarer as part of the acquired business, along with Niantic’s game teams and related live experiences. Scopely’s announcement of the agreement and its closing announcement describe the transaction.
Who owns Pokémon GO now?
The ownership chain is Scopely, then Savvy Games Group, then Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Savvy announced the closing and described Scopely as a wholly owned entity of Savvy. PIF announced in 2023 that Savvy had completed its $4.9 billion acquisition of Scopely. These announcements establish the corporate ownership chain; they do not say that PIF or the Saudi government directly runs Pokémon GO.

What did Scopely acquire—and what did it not establish?
The deal covered Niantic’s games business, not necessarily every product, technology asset, or activity associated with Niantic. The announcements specifically name these titles and services:

The available transaction announcements do not establish that all other Niantic products or capabilities moved as part of the deal. It is more accurate to describe this as the sale of Niantic’s games business than as a sale of all of Niantic.
Will Pokémon GO keep the same team?
At the time of the transition announcement, Pokémon GO team lead Ed Wu said, “The entire Pokémon GO team is staying together through this partnership.” He also said, “Our partnership with The Pokémon Company will continue as it has for the last decade.” Those are announcement-era commitments, not proof that staffing, privacy practices, monetization, content, or future operations will never change. What does the acquisition mean for players?
The confirmed change is ownership of the named games business: it moved under Scopely, whose parent is Savvy Games Group. Wu said the Pokémon GO team would remain together and its partnership with The Pokémon Company would continue. Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke said he was confident the games would continue connecting people and encouraging exploration as part of Scopely; that was his outlook, not a guarantee of specific future decisions.
The announcements do not establish that the acquisition will leave prices, in-game purchases, privacy practices, staffing, or game features unchanged. The $3.5 billion figure is the announced deal value; the sources cited here do not provide a purchase-price allocation or valuation methodology.
