MSI is owned by Micro-Star International Co., Ltd., a publicly traded Taiwanese company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2377. It is not a subsidiary of ASUS, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, or another major technology company. Because MSI is publicly listed, its shares are distributed among public investors, institutions, insiders, and other shareholders. Founder and chairman Hsu Hsiang—often called Joseph Hsu—remains a substantial shareholder and an important influence on the company.
This article concerns the PC-hardware company formally named Micro-Star International, not Microsoft, MicroStrategy, Super Micro Computer, or another organization using the initials MSI.

MSI is owned by public shareholders, not one private parent
The legal company behind the MSI brand is Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. The Taiwan Stock Exchange identifies it as a Taiwanese company listed under ticker 2377, with ISIN TW0002377009. The exchange lists its establishment date as August 1986 and its listing date as October 31, 1998. See the Taiwan Stock Exchange company profile.
That listing changes the answer to “Who owns MSI?” There is no single private owner in the usual sense. Shareholders collectively own the listed company. Those shareholders can include founders, directors, executives, investment companies, pension and insurance funds, asset managers, index funds, and individual investors.

In practical terms, the ownership structure has several layers:
- Legal company: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
- Shareholders: The investors and insiders who hold MSI shares.
- Governance: The board of directors, including the chairman and independent directors.
- Management: Executives responsible for day-to-day operations and strategy.
- Consumer brands: MSI and labels such as MSI Gaming, used by the company and its subsidiaries.
These layers overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A founder can have substantial influence without owning more than half the shares, and an investment fund can hold shares without operating the company.
Who founded MSI?
MSI was established in 1986. The company’s corporate-governance materials identify Hsu Hsiang as one of MSI’s founders. He is also the company’s current chairman and a former president. MSI’s corporate-governance report supports his founder status.

Some secondary accounts describe MSI as having been started by five engineers and list additional names, but the available official source confirms Hsu Hsiang as a founder without establishing a complete founder list. It is therefore more accurate to describe Hsu as one of MSI’s founders, rather than call him the sole founder or sole owner.
Who is Joseph Hsu, and how much MSI does he own?
Hsu Hsiang is commonly rendered as Joseph Hsu in English-language references. He has held senior leadership roles at MSI for many years and remains chairman.

The categories should not automatically be added together and described as Hsu’s personal ownership. Personal holdings, family-related holdings, and nominee-held positions can have different legal and reporting treatments. The filing reports them separately, so they should remain separate unless an authoritative filing explicitly defines them as one consolidated beneficial position.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange profile reports company capital of NT$8,448,561,990; that figure is stated capital, not the company’s market capitalization. Ownership percentages also depend on the relevant share count and record date.
Does the founder control MSI?
The safest description is that MSI retains strong founder and insider influence, not that one founder is proven to own or control the entire company.
Hsu Hsiang is a founder, chairman, director, and substantial shareholder. Other long-serving executives and directors also contribute to the company’s institutional knowledge and governance. Those facts can give the founder and management considerable influence over strategy and board decisions.
However, “influence” is different from “majority control.” A legal conclusion that the founder controls MSI would require current evidence about total shares, other directors’ holdings, related-party or concert-party arrangements, voting agreements, special voting rights, and shareholder-meeting results. The cited disclosures do not establish that Hsu personally owns more than 50% of MSI.
Who runs MSI?
MSI’s governance materials identify:
- Hsu Hsiang: Chairman and founder.
- Huang Chin-Ching: Vice chairman and president.
- Lin Wen-Tung: Director and senior vice president.
- Other directors: Including executive and independent directors.
Huang Chin-Ching is described as a long-serving MSI executive and a former Sony Industries Taiwan engineer. Leadership roles can change, so readers checking governance for investment or corporate-research purposes should consult MSI’s latest announcements and filings. MSI’s investor-relations page provides the company’s public disclosures.

The distinction matters: shareholders legally own the company, the board oversees governance, and executives run operations. The same person can occupy more than one of those roles, but the roles still have different meanings.
Who are MSI’s major shareholders?
MSI’s shareholders include more than one type of investor. Public disclosures may identify Taiwanese investment companies, insurance and pension funds, international asset managers, index funds, directors, executives, and individual investors.
Names such as Vanguard-related funds, the New Labor Pension Fund, Robeco Capital Growth Funds, Cathay Life Insurance, Shun Yin Investment, Curie Industrial, and Miin Wu have appeared in shareholder-related search material. That material is not sufficient here to create a verified, current ranked shareholder table. The presence of a fund or institution as a shareholder also does not mean it operates MSI or controls the MSI brand.

Share ownership changes over time, and a fund’s reported holding may be made on behalf of its own investors.
Is MSI owned by ASUS, NVIDIA, Lenovo, or another company?
There is no identified major technology-company parent of MSI in the cited corporate disclosures. MSI is the listed company at the top of its own corporate group. It has regional subsidiaries and affiliated entities, but those companies are part of MSI’s structure rather than parent companies that own MSI.
- ASUS: No evidence in the cited sources establishes ASUS as MSI’s owner. ASUS is a separate technology company.
- NVIDIA: NVIDIA technology may appear in MSI graphics cards and other products, but a technology or supply relationship is not ownership.
- Intel and AMD: Platform compatibility, processors, chipsets, and partnership arrangements do not make either company MSI’s parent.
- Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Acer: These are separate PC companies, not identified owners of MSI.
- Microsoft: Windows or other software relationships do not mean Microsoft owns MSI.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that “nobody owns MSI.” MSI is owned collectively by its shareholders. The accurate point is that no single outside technology company has been identified as MSI’s corporate parent in the reviewed disclosures.

They should not be confused with companies that own MSI itself. MSI’s corporate-governance page and investor-relations disclosures provide additional group-company context.
What does MSI make?
MSI is best known to consumers for gaming hardware, but its business is broader. The Taiwan Stock Exchange profile lists products and activities including:
- Motherboards
- Graphics cards
- Gaming, creator, and productivity notebooks
- All-in-one PCs and desktop systems
- Gaming and professional monitors
- Servers and workstations
- Barebone systems
- Industrial-computing products
- Communication devices and consumer electronics
- Automotive infotainment products
This breadth explains why MSI products appear in several hardware categories rather than only gaming laptops or PC components. The official MSI website is the appropriate destination for current product lines and regional availability.

What MSI’s ownership means for buyers
MSI’s public-company status can help answer questions about corporate identity and independence, but it does not automatically determine whether a particular product is reliable, affordable, repairable, or well supported.
A buyer should evaluate the exact model and region, including:
- Warranty length and exclusions
- Local repair and service coverage
- Return policy
- Display, keyboard, port, and upgrade specifications
- Firmware and driver support
- Noise, battery, and performance characteristics
- Price compared with equivalent ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, HP, or Gigabyte products
Ownership also does not prove that MSI manufactures every component itself. Brand ownership, manufacturing arrangements, contractors, and component suppliers are separate questions. Likewise, a product containing NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, or Microsoft technology remains an MSI product; the partnership does not transfer ownership of the MSI brand.
Quick Recap
How to interpret future MSI ownership disclosures
- Confirm the legal issuer. Look for Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. and ticker 2377.
- Check the record date. Shareholder figures are snapshots and can become outdated.
- Separate personal and related holdings. Do not combine family, nominee, or affiliated holdings without reading the filing’s definitions.
- Distinguish shares from control. A reported holding does not automatically establish voting control.
- Identify the relationship. A shareholder, supplier, technology partner, distributor, or subsidiary is not necessarily a parent company.
- Use primary filings for rankings. Consult MSI investor relations or Taiwan regulatory disclosures before relying on a current list of major shareholders.
