Who Owns Frédérique Constant and Alpina? Citizen’s 2016 Acquisition

Citizen completed its acquisition of Frederique Constant Holding SA in July 2016, bringing Frédérique Constant, Alpina, and deMonaco into its watch portfolio. Current official sources list Frédérique Constant and Alpina; Ateliers deMonaco’s present commercial status is not established.

Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. owns Frédérique Constant and Alpina as part of its watch portfolio. It announced its agreement to acquire their parent company on May 26, 2016, and reported completing the acquisition on July 11, 2016. The deal also brought the deMonaco brand—styled Ateliers deMonaco in brand-history materials—into the acquired group, though official sources do not establish its current commercial status.

What did Citizen acquire, and when?

Citizen announced an agreement on May 26, 2016, to acquire Geneva-based Frederique Constant Holding SA. The announcement named three brands: Frédérique Constant, Alpina, and deMonaco. Citizen’s 2016 annual report records the business combination as taking place on July 11, 2016. It says Citizen acquired 100% of the voting rights for CHF 125 million in cash.

The announcement described a planned acquisition; the completion date, stake, and cash consideration come from Citizen’s later annual report. The CHF 125 million is the reported consideration in Swiss francs, not a current valuation or a figure converted into another currency.

Why did Citizen make the deal?

Citizen presented the acquisition as part of its Citizen Global Plan 2018 multi-brand strategy. Its stated aim was to broaden the portfolio from accessible timepieces into accessible luxury, improve its presence in higher-priced markets, and expand distribution. CEO Toshio Tokura specifically cited the opportunity to sell Frédérique Constant through Citizen’s existing distribution channels, particularly in Japan and the United States.

Citizen also pointed to potential collaboration in movement technology and shared infrastructure. These were strategic aims and expectations at the time of the announcement, not proof that each anticipated synergy was later achieved. Founders Aletta and Peter Stas described the arrangement as a Swiss-Japanese partnership intended to develop and market accessible-luxury watches.

Where do the three brands stand in Citizen’s portfolio?

Brand What the official material establishes
Frédérique Constant Citizen’s current watch-business portfolio page lists the brand. Citizen’s corporate history records it becoming a consolidated subsidiary in July 2016.
Alpina Citizen’s current watch-business portfolio page lists the brand.
deMonaco / Ateliers deMonaco The 2016 acquisition announcement names deMonaco. Frédérique Constant’s Manufacture Experience materials and its 2025 guarantee booklet refer to Ateliers deMonaco in a historical context. Citizen’s current portfolio page does not list it; these sources do not establish whether it currently produces, markets, or sells watches separately.

The distinction matters: the acquisition brought all three names into the group, but current corporate listing is clear for Frédérique Constant and Alpina and not for Ateliers deMonaco. A historical reference to the latter is not, by itself, evidence of current operations.

What did the brands represent in the portfolio?

Citizen described the deal at portfolio level: it sought a broader range spanning accessible watches and accessible luxury, rather than presenting the three acquired brands as interchangeable. Current Frédérique Constant collections include Classics and Manufacture lines; the brand’s official collection pages provide examples of its current product focus. Citizen’s portfolio listing is the available current corporate evidence for Alpina, while the cited material does not support a detailed like-for-like comparison of all three brands.

A contemporaneous June 9, 2016 report from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry said Frédérique Constant was making and selling 150,000 pieces annually. That is a 2016-era scale figure, not a current production number.
