“Owned by Discord Inc.” does not mean one person owns all of Discord. The corporation’s equity has been distributed through founder holdings, employee equity and private financing rounds. Discord does not publish a current, complete shareholder list comparable to the ownership disclosures of a public company.
Who founded Discord?
Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy co-founded Discord, according to the company’s 2025 leadership announcement.

Being a founder does not establish current control. Later financing can dilute founders’ percentages, and the available public sources do not establish Citron’s or Vishnevskiy’s current ownership stake.
Who runs Discord now?
Humam Sakhnini became Discord’s chief executive officer on April 28, 2025. The same announcement says Citron moved into a CEO-adviser role and remained on the board, while Vishnevskiy continued as chief technology officer. Sakhnini also joined the board.
A CEO manages the business; a board member helps oversee corporate governance; neither title by itself proves ownership or voting control.
Which companies and funds have invested in Discord?
Publicly identified or reported backers include the following. This is not a verified current cap table, and it does not rank investors by stake or prove that every named investor still owns the same interest.

Does Sony own Discord?
Sony has been reported as a Discord investor, but the available evidence does not show that Sony bought Discord outright or operates it as a subsidiary. A strategic minority investment is different from an acquisition or a parent-company relationship.
Does Tencent own Discord?
Tencent has also been identified as an investor. Nothing in the available sources establishes Tencent as Discord’s majority owner or controlling parent. Discord remains an independent company.
Did Microsoft buy Discord?
No. Published reporting says Microsoft approached Discord about a takeover in 2021, but no acquisition was completed. Discord did not become a Microsoft subsidiary. The precise offer terms and negotiations were not established in a definitive transaction filing; see the reported background from LegalClarity.
Is Discord publicly traded?
No, as of August 18, 2026. Discord was not listed on the NYSE, Nasdaq or another public exchange, and it had no public ticker symbol. The status is reflected by Nasdaq Private Market and Forge.
- You cannot buy Discord shares through an ordinary retail brokerage account.
- There is no exchange-quoted market price or public market capitalization.
- Private-market indications are not guaranteed liquidation values or prices available to everyone.
What is Discord’s IPO status?
Discord reportedly filed confidentially for a U.S. initial public offering in January 2026, with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan discussed as potential lead underwriters. The report appears in Forge’s IPO coverage.
A confidential filing is only an exploratory step. It is not the same as a public S-1 registration statement, IPO pricing or exchange listing. A company can amend, delay, withdraw or abandon a confidential filing. No public prospectus, final share price, confirmed listing date or ticker was established in the available sources by August 18, 2026. Therefore, “Discord is going public” would be too definitive; “Discord reportedly confidentially filed for a potential IPO” is more accurate.

Not through the public stock market. Private transactions may sometimes be available to accredited or institutional investors, subject to eligibility checks, company approval, transfer restrictions and the availability of shares.
| Private-market source | Published indication | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq Private Market | $32.96 per share shown as of July 13, 2026 | Private-market estimate; access described as limited to accredited entities and institutional investors. |
| Forge | “Forge Price” of $31.31 shown as of July 30, 2026 | Derived estimate, not an official quoted stock price; liquidity is not guaranteed. |
| UpMarket | Offerings described with a $50,000 minimum | Accreditation, minimum investment, share availability and transfer conditions apply. |
Discord’s last widely cited primary valuation was approximately $15 billion in its 2021 funding round; that is a historical private-round valuation, not its current market value. Forge later reported an estimated valuation of about $8.53 billion in July 2026 based on its marketplace data. Neither figure is a current public-market capitalization or an official company valuation.
For most retail investors, buying shares of Sony or Tencent would provide only broad, indirect exposure to those companies’ businesses—not direct ownership of Discord. Waiting for a confirmed public listing would be the straightforward public-market route, but no such listing was confirmed as of the date above.
Who owns a Discord server?
This is a different question from who owns Discord Inc. A server owner is the account or organization that controls a particular Discord community. Owning or administering that server does not confer ownership of Discord the company.
Discord’s server-ownership transfer policy says an inactive-server request generally requires at least 100 members, an owner inactive for at least one month, the requester’s activity within the last 30 days, administrator or moderator permissions, and a server that is not monetized. Transfers can also be completed using Discord’s own in-app ownership tools when the current owner cooperates.
Bottom line
Discord is an independent, privately held company owned collectively through founder, employee and investor equity. Sony and Tencent are reported investors, Microsoft did not acquire it, and no single controlling owner is established by the public information available as of August 18, 2026.
