Does MIT own Bose?
Yes—in the sense that MIT holds a majority of Bose Corporation stock. In 2011, founder Amar Bose gave the Institute a majority stake as non-voting shares. MIT receives cash dividends when Bose pays them, and the gift terms direct those dividends to support MIT’s education and research mission. MIT’s announcement of the gift explains both the share transfer and its limits.
That does not mean MIT runs Bose. The shares are non-voting, and MIT cannot sell them or participate in the company’s management or governance. Bose Automotive also describes the shares held for MIT as non-voting and non-transferable, and says the company remains private and independent. Bose Automotive’s explanation of the trust provides that corroborating account.
Ownership, control and leadership are different
“Who owns Bose?” can refer to three different things: who holds an economic stake, who has voting or governance rights, and who operates the business. In Bose’s case, the available official information supports a majority economic stake for MIT but explicitly excludes MIT from voting, management and governance.

- Economic ownership: MIT holds the majority of Bose Corporation stock described in the 2011 gift announcement and receives dividends when paid.
- Voting and governance: MIT’s shares are non-voting, and the gift terms bar the Institute from participating in Bose’s management or governance.
- Operational leadership: Bose’s corporate leadership page identifies Lila Snyder as CEO. That is information about who leads the business, not a list of shareholders.
The official sources establish the stake as a majority, but they do not publish a complete current share register or identify all holders of voting shares. It is therefore more accurate to say “MIT holds a majority stake” than to assign MIT an exact percentage or claim that the university controls Bose.
Did Transom Capital buy Bose?
No. In April 2023, Transom Capital Group assumed ownership of Bose Professional’s commercial installation and conferencing businesses. Bose said its portable PA systems would remain with Bose as part of its core consumer business. The announcement described a sale of specific businesses, not a sale of Bose Corporation. Bose’s announcement dated April 11, 2023 sets out the transaction’s scope.

Why some company records can be confusing
UK Companies House lists an active private limited company called BOSE LIMITED, incorporated in 1974, with records identifying people with significant control. Those filings apply to that UK entity; they are not a complete ownership record for the Delaware-incorporated US parent, Bose Corporation. The distinction matters when using a country-specific company register to answer a question about the parent company.

What is established about Bose’s ownership?
The strongest public account of the ownership arrangement is MIT’s dated 2011 description of Amar Bose’s gift: the Institute received a majority of Bose Corporation stock, but in a form that does not give it voting, management or governance authority. Bose describes itself as private and independent. The available official sources do not establish the precise current percentage held by MIT or provide a full current breakdown of voting shareholders.
