Independent testing of particular Kirkland 5W-30 samples found results consistent with their labeled viscosity grade and service categories, but that is not proof of long-term engine protection or a guarantee for every product. Whether a Kirkland oil is right for your car depends on the viscosity and specifications in its owner’s manual.
Who makes Kirkland Signature motor oil?
Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) identified Warren Distribution as the manufacturer of the Kirkland Signature 5W-30 samples it assessed in 2020 and 2021. A secondary attribution report, last verified August 31, 2026, says Highline Warren LLC appeared as the API engine-oil licensee for 19 of 20 Kirkland-branded licensed oils it reviewed. Together, those sources support describing Warren Distribution, now part of Highline Warren, as the maker associated with most Kirkland consumer motor oils.
That attribution does not apply to every Kirkland-branded oil. The same report identifies Kirkland Signature HDMO 15W-40 as an exception, licensed to Chevron Energy Technology Company. The licensee information is reported secondhand; the source describes its review of the API directory rather than serving as the directory itself.
What does independent testing say about its quality?
PQIA assessed specific Kirkland Signature 5W-30 samples, not the entire product range. Its 2020 assessment covered a sample purchased January 24, 2020. PQIA said the test results met SAE J300 requirements for the labeled viscosity grade and were consistent with the API service categories shown on the label. In a 2021 report, PQIA reported a similar result for a Kirkland 5W-30 sample labeled API SP and ILSAC GF-6A.

These are useful, positive checks on the tested samples, but they have clear limits. PQIA says its laboratory tests alone cannot establish whether an oil meets a particular API service category, and its findings apply only to the samples and tests conducted. They do not show long-term engine wear or lifespan, establish that every batch is identical, or prove that Kirkland oil is the same formulation as a named premium brand. The reviewed sources do not provide a long-term engine-life comparison or a head-to-head performance ranking against other brands.
Which Kirkland oils does Costco list, and what do they claim?
Costco’s U.S. product listing, accessed October 8, 2026, describes two full-synthetic products: 0W-20 dexos1 Gen3 and 5W-30 High Mileage. Costco lists API SP and ILSAC GF-6A claims for the products, as well as backward compatibility with earlier API and ILSAC categories. The detailed vehicle-maker specifications differ by product:

These are Costco’s product-page claims, not independent confirmation that a particular oil is approved for a particular vehicle. Check the exact bottle label and your vehicle’s required specification before buying or filling the engine.
Costco says its listed oils are intended for gasoline and flex-fuel passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, and gasoline-electric hybrids, including vehicles operating under severe conditions. For the 5W-30 High Mileage product, Costco also says the formulation includes seal-sweller additives intended to help aging seals. These statements describe the company’s intended uses and product claims; they are not independent findings that every vehicle is suitable or that the additives will produce a particular result.

How to decide whether Kirkland oil is right for your vehicle
- Find the required viscosity. Check the owner’s manual for the specified grade, such as 0W-20 or 5W-30. Do not choose a different grade simply because it is on sale or carries a familiar brand.
- Match the required performance standard. Look for the exact API, ILSAC, dexos, or vehicle-maker specification your manual calls for. A product’s general API or ILSAC claim does not automatically satisfy every manufacturer-specific requirement.
- Confirm the application. Costco describes the listed oils for gasoline and flex-fuel passenger vehicles, light trucks, SUVs, and gasoline-electric hybrids. That description does not establish suitability for every diesel engine or severe-duty application; follow the manual for those cases.
- Compare like with like. If price matters, compare cost per usable quart at the time and place you shop, considering pack size and any purchase limits. Also compare the exact viscosity and required specifications—not just the brand name or the words “full synthetic.”
What Kirkland oil costs: a dated snapshot
The Associated Press reported on September 14, 2026, that a two-pack of five-quart Kirkland full-synthetic oil cost about $58, up from roughly $30 a year earlier, and that Costco had imposed a limit of two boxes per customer per week at that time. These are dated retail figures and may not reflect today’s price, local availability, or purchase limits.
