Anat Ashkenazi became senior vice president and chief financial officer of Alphabet and Google on July 31, 2024, succeeding Ruth Porat. Ashkenazi joined Alphabet from Eli Lilly, where she had worked since 2001 and served as CFO from February 2021.
When did Anat Ashkenazi replace Ruth Porat?
Alphabet announced Ashkenazi’s appointment on June 5, 2024, and it took effect on July 31, 2024. The CFO position covered both Alphabet, Google’s parent company, and Google itself. Ruth Porat continued as CFO through the transition and served in the role until July 2024. Alphabet’s announcement set out the appointment and effective date.
What happened to Ruth Porat?
Porat’s move to president and chief investment officer was announced in 2023, before the CFO handoff was completed. She remained CFO during the intervening period. Alphabet’s 2026 proxy statement says she served as CFO through July 2024 and has been president and chief investment officer since September 2023.
Who is Anat Ashkenazi?
Ashkenazi is a finance executive whose career before Alphabet was centered on Eli Lilly. She joined the pharmaceutical company in 2001 and held positions across finance, strategy, and operations. From 2016 to 2021, she was senior vice president, controller, and CFO of Lilly Research Laboratories; in February 2021, she became Eli Lilly’s CFO. Lilly said she resigned to pursue an opportunity outside the pharmaceutical industry. Its June 5, 2024 announcement quoted chair and CEO David A. Ricks describing her “23 years of outstanding service to our company.”

How do Ashkenazi and Porat’s backgrounds differ?
