The Portland Trail Blazers are no longer looking for a buyer: the NBA approved a controlling-interest sale to an investor group led by Tom Dundon on March 30, 2026. The names MacKenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos and others that appeared in 2025 coverage were speculative possibilities, not confirmed bidders in the public accounts cited here.
Who owns the Trail Blazers now?
The NBA Board of Governors approved the sale of the team’s controlling interest to an investor group led by Tom Dundon on March 30, 2026, and said Dundon would serve as the Trail Blazers’ governor. The NBA’s announcement establishes the approval and the group’s leadership; the Associated Press reported that the new owners took over the following day, March 31. AP reported a sale price of $4.25 billion.
This was a group purchase, not a solo acquisition by Dundon. AP named Portland-based Sheel Tyle, Collective Global co-founder; Marc Zahr, Blue Owl Capital co-president; the Cherng Family Trust; and Stan Middleman of Freedom Mortgage among the ownership group’s members. The acquisition also included the G League’s Rip City Remix and Rip City Management, the company that operates the Moda Center. AP’s account of the ownership group and takeover provides those details.
Why were billionaires being named as possible buyers?
Paul Allen’s estate announced a sale process on May 13, 2025, consistent with Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct the estate proceeds to philanthropy. Allen & Company and Hogan Lovells were hired to lead the process, which was then expected to continue into the 2025–26 basketball season. Any final purchase agreement required NBA ratification. The Associated Press report republished by NBA.com described the estate’s rationale and process.

A day later, GeekWire published a list of people who might be able to buy the team. It was a speculative possibilities article, not a report of bids or finalists. The distinction matters: personal wealth, a local connection, or a history of sports interest does not establish that someone was approached, made an offer, or could secure league approval. GeekWire’s May 14, 2025 candidate analysis is the source for the names below.
What the 2025 candidate list did—and did not—show
| Name | What the 2025 coverage said | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| MacKenzie Scott | GeekWire said she could afford a purchase and noted that her Yield Giving foundation had supported nonprofits in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The article described her Portland connection as tenuous and the idea as a long shot. | A 2022 rumor of interest, attributed to Portland sports columnist John Canzano, was not evidence of a bid. GeekWire did not report that Scott pursued the 2025 sale. |
| Jeff Bezos | The article pointed to reports of his interest in other teams and speculation about the Seattle Seahawks, then suggested he might wait for a possible Seattle NBA team. | Those references concerned other sports opportunities. They were not evidence that Bezos pursued the Blazers. |
| Larry Ellison | GeekWire said he had tried to buy an NBA franchise three times since 2010 and had the capital, while noting he had no obvious Portland tie. | The article did not report a Blazers offer or bid. |
| Travis Boersma | GeekWire identified the Dutch Bros executive chairman as an Oregon business figure. | The sports connection was conjectural; the article did not report a bid. |
| Tim Boyle | GeekWire described the Columbia Sportswear leader as a wealthy Portland native. | The article said he would need a partner or group to make a bid and did not report that he submitted one. |
| Phil Knight | AP/NBA coverage in May 2025 said Jody Allen reportedly rebuffed Knight’s 2022 offer of more than $2 billion. GeekWire reported Knight said in May 2025 that he was out of the running. | This is historical evidence of an offer, not a current possibility or an indication that Knight was a bidder in the later sale. |
How to read the sale figures
Different figures in 2025 coverage referred to different things and dates. AP/NBA reported a CNBC valuation of $3.65 billion for the Trail Blazers in 2025, while GeekWire cited CNBC’s estimate of about $4.6 billion as the average NBA team valuation that May. AP/NBA also reported the Boston Celtics’ 2025 sale price of $6.1 billion. These figures are not interchangeable: a valuation estimate is not a transaction price, and a different team’s sale is only context.

The completed transaction’s reported $4.25 billion price comes from AP’s April 2026 account, after the sale. It should not be treated as proof that any individual on the earlier speculative list had the cash available or was willing to buy. Likewise, wealth estimates printed in the May 2025 GeekWire article—including nearly $30 billion for Scott, attributed to Forbes, and $226 billion for Bezos—are dated estimates, not current net-worth figures or measures of liquid funds.

The live question in 2025 was who might pursue a sale initiated by Allen’s estate; the current answer is that a group led by Dundon bought the controlling interest, with NBA approval. Scott, Bezos, Ellison, Boersma and Boyle remain names from a speculative article, while Knight’s reported 2022 offer is separate historical context. The public accounts cited above do not establish whether the speculative candidates were privately approached or submitted bids.
