U.S. farm equipment sales fell year over year in March 2025: 16,180 tractors were sold, down 13.6%, and 241 self-propelled combines, down 37.7%. The figures, attributed to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), show a sharper decline in combines and continued weakness through the first quarter. AEM described tariffs and the broader agricultural economy as sources of uncertainty, but the report does not isolate tariffs as the cause of the drop.
March 2025 farm equipment sales at a glance
| Equipment | March 2025 sales | March 2024 sales | Year-over-year change | Sales through March 2025 | Change through March |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Farm tractors | 16,180 | 18,724 | Down 13.6% | 36,269 | Down 15.1% from 42,701 in 2024 |
| Self-propelled combines | 241 | 387 | Down 37.7% | 552 | Down 56.5% from 1,201 in 2024 |
These are U.S. sales counts for the periods reported, not a forecast or a measure of equipment prices. The March tractor total was 2,544 fewer units than in March 2024; combine sales were 146 fewer. The larger combine percentage decline reflects both the unit change and the smaller sales base.
Which tractor segments declined most?
Every tractor category listed in the report posted a year-over-year decline in March 2025. The sharpest percentage decrease was in four-wheel-drive tractors, followed by two-wheel-drive tractors above 100 horsepower.
| Tractor category | March 2025 change from March 2024 |
|---|---|
| 2WD under 40 hp | Down 13.8% |
| 2WD, 40–100 hp | Down 10.2% |
| 2WD over 100 hp | Down 18.6% |
| 4WD | Down 19.7% |
What the report says about tariffs and the farm economy
Curt Blades, AEM’s senior vice president, said, “There is uncertainty due to tariffs and the overall ag economy.” The statement describes the challenging backdrop for equipment markets; it does not quantify a tariff effect or establish that tariffs caused a particular share of the sales decline. The report also gives no forecast for later months.

The figures were published by Cecilia Gray in Successful Farming on April 14, 2025, with the sales data attributed to AEM. They are a period-specific snapshot of U.S. sales in March 2025 and the year-to-date period through that month, not evidence of market conditions in 2026.
Inventory figures reported for March
The article reports opening inventories of 118,280 farm tractors and 1,063 self-propelled combines. It also lists category-level tractor inventory counts, but does not explain the inventory measure in enough detail to interpret it as available-for-sale stock, total dealer holdings, or a signal of future sales. The inventory totals therefore should not be treated as a direct explanation for the sales declines.
