23andMe’s consumer DNA business was acquired by TTAM Research Institute, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation led by co-founder Anne Wojcicki—not by a private equity firm. TTAM completed the court-supervised acquisition of 23andMe’s Personal Genome Service and Research Services business lines on July 14, 2025. An earlier proposed deal with biotechnology company Regeneron was superseded. The public transaction announcements establish the buyer and the acquired business lines, but they do not tell each customer what happened to their particular DNA sample, data, or consent settings.
Who bought 23andMe’s consumer DNA business?
TTAM Research Institute completed the acquisition on July 14, 2025. 23andMe described TTAM as a California nonprofit public benefit corporation led by Anne Wojcicki, 23andMe’s co-founder and former CEO. The completed transaction covered 23andMe’s Personal Genome Service and Research Services business lines. The completion announcement does not say that TTAM acquired every 23andMe asset.
The original headline’s “private equity firm” description is incorrect, and “largest consumer DNA database” is not a verified ranking in the transaction sources. The deal announcements identify the acquired operations, but do not provide a comparative measure establishing that the associated customer information was the largest database of its kind.
How did the buyer change?
Regeneron was a proposed buyer, not the company that completed the acquisition. These were two distinct transaction agreements, announced at different stages:

The figures are the announced prices for the respective proposed or agreed transactions, not a measure of the value of an individual customer’s data. Regeneron’s May announcement stated that its deal still required court approval and other conditions. In June, 23andMe announced the TTAM agreement and said it would supersede and nullify the Regeneron agreement upon court approval. The July completion announcement identifies TTAM as the buyer of the named business lines.
What did the acquired business do with DNA information?
Customers sent saliva samples to 23andMe for DNA analysis. The California Attorney General says the company stored raw DNA sequence data and used it to generate reports, including ancestry, ethnicity, and genetic health predisposition information. That makes “consumer DNA database” shorthand for a relationship involving customer accounts, genetic information, reports, and biological samples—not simply a list of names.

The transaction announcements identify the business lines TTAM acquired, but do not itemize the fate of every data record or stored sample. Nor do they establish what consent settings applied to any particular customer account.
What is known about the 2023 breach and legal scrutiny?
According to the California Department of Justice’s 2026 announcement, 23andMe confirmed a major breach on October 6, 2023. The state says an attacker accessed about 14,000 customer accounts over five months, then used credential stuffing and a vulnerability in DNA Relatives to obtain information about nearly 7 million customers. The agency says the information included identifying details, ancestry reports, and information about DNA shared with potential relatives.

Those breach figures and descriptions are the state’s account of the incident, presented in connection with its lawsuit; they should not be read as a final judicial finding. The California Attorney General also alleges inadequate security procedures and misleading statements before and after the breach. The department says its 2026 lawsuit is separate from its pending bankruptcy-court challenge concerning the sale of Californians’ genetic information and biological material. The cited announcement does not establish the final outcome of either proceeding.
In March 2025, FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson wrote to the U.S. Trustee about consumer concerns over a possible sale or transfer of 23andMe data. He emphasized that companies should keep their promises about sensitive information. That statement expressed concern; it was not an FTC order approving or blocking the sale.

What happens to your 23andMe data after the sale?
The public transaction announcements do not provide an individualized answer. They do not tell a reader whether a specific account’s data or sample was retained, what consent choice was recorded, or whether a deletion request was completed. The California DOJ’s announcement and the FTC chairman’s statement describe scrutiny of privacy and security, but they do not resolve those account-specific questions or establish current data practices.
If you need to know the status of your own account or sample, consult the current 23andMe or Research Institute privacy materials and contact the service through its current official support channel. Check the account itself for available data, consent, or deletion controls, and keep a record of any request and response. Do not assume that the business transfer alone either deleted your information or preserved a particular consent choice.

What the sale does—and does not—establish
