Those developments complicate the forecast; they do not settle Ubisoft’s later financial trajectory.
What the January 2025 analysis argued
Tom Henderson’s Insider Gaming article, published January 8, 2025, portrayed Ubisoft as arriving at a crossroads after a difficult 2024. It pointed to weak financial performance, delayed and canceled projects, and rising costs, and treated Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a major near-term test. Henderson also argued that even a successful launch would not, by itself, resolve the company’s broader problems.
That was a forecast made before Shadows launched, before Ubisoft reported its FY2024–25 results, and before the company announced a Tencent investment in a new subsidiary. It should be read as a time-specific analysis, not a current assessment of Ubisoft’s finances.
What Ubisoft reported for FY2024–25
In its May 14, 2025 full-year release, Ubisoft reported lower net bookings and losses under both IFRS and non-IFRS measures. It also reported positive free cash flow and cash on hand. These are distinct financial measures: bookings are not the same as IFRS sales, and free cash flow does not erase an operating loss.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot characterized the year as “challenging” and cited “mixed dynamics across our portfolio, amid intense industry competition.” The release supports the view that Ubisoft faced material financial pressure in FY2024–25. It does not establish that this was the worst year across the company’s entire history.
How Assassin’s Creed Shadows performed
Ubisoft said Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched on March 20, 2025. In its FY2024–25 release, the company reported that the game had the second-highest Day 1 sales revenue in franchise history, behind Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and that consumer spending and player count had outperformed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as of the release.

These are Ubisoft’s own comparisons, not independently established market measurements in the available source set. They indicate a strong launch by the company’s stated benchmarks, but they do not show that Shadows reversed the full-year financial results or fixed the cost and portfolio issues raised in the January analysis.
Ubisoft announced on June 16, 2026 that Shadows’ final update was available, adding a story arc and a Domains feature. Ubisoft lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC storefronts, and the Mac App Store. The update confirms continued product support through that date; it is not evidence of the game’s current sales or profitability.

What the Tencent announcement changed—and what it did not establish
On March 27, 2025, Ubisoft announced that Tencent would invest €1.16 billion for an approximate 25% economic interest in a new subsidiary centered on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. Ubisoft described the plan as a way to build evergreen, multiplatform game ecosystems.
The announcement described a proposed structure and transaction, not proof of final completion or final terms. It marks a significant planned change around three major franchises, but by itself does not establish that Ubisoft’s overall financial challenges were resolved.

Can 2025 be called Ubisoft’s most challenging year?
Not on the evidence established here. The January article’s “most challenging” framing is a judgment, and the supplied facts do not provide a systematic comparison with every year in Ubisoft’s history. Ubisoft’s FY2024–25 results substantiate serious pressure: net bookings fell 20.5% year over year, and the company reported operating losses. At the same time, Shadows’ reported performance, positive free cash flow, cash on hand, and the planned Tencent transaction show why the picture cannot be reduced to a single failed launch or a simple declaration of collapse.
For a current assessment, the missing piece is later financial detail. Ubisoft’s investor calendar lists FY2025–26 earnings dated May 20, 2026, Q1 2026–27 sales dated July 23, 2026, and H1 results scheduled for November 19, 2026. The available material identifies those reporting milestones but does not establish what the May and July results showed. So it cannot support a definitive claim that Ubisoft had recovered—or continued to deteriorate—by October 2026.
