There is no well-supported, comparable all-time top 10 of the richest TV showrunners in the available reporting. Published figures mix personal net-worth estimates, annual earnings and the value of entertainment deals—and they do not consistently distinguish showrunners from creators, producers or performers. The figures below are useful as dated snapshots, not as a definitive ranking.
Why a definitive top 10 is hard to establish
A showrunner generally oversees the writing and production of a series’ episodes, but television credits do not map neatly onto that job. One person may be a creator, executive producer, writer and performer; another may run a show without owning the underlying rights. Forbes describes the role as overseeing the writing and production of each episode, while the precise responsibilities vary by series. Forbes’ 2018 profile of Shonda Rhimes uses that description.

Wealth comparisons have a second problem: the numbers measure different things. Net worth is an estimate of a person’s assets minus liabilities. Annual earnings cover a period, and a contract’s headline value is not the same as personal wealth. The available sources do not establish a shared valuation method or a consistently sourced list of ten people.
What the reported figures say—and what they do not
| Person or group | Reported figure | What it measures and its limits |
|---|---|---|
| Matt Stone and Trey Parker | Estimated at $1.2 billion each, reported in 2025 | Forbes Australia associated the estimates with a reported $1.5 billion Paramount deal. The deal value is not the same as either creator’s personal net worth, and the estimates are dated media estimates, not disclosed audited statements. Forbes Australia, 2025. |
| Shonda Rhimes | Estimated net worth of $135 million, reported in 2018 | A historical estimate. The same Forbes report discussed an estimated $100 million, four-year Netflix pact; that contract figure is not an additional net-worth estimate. Forbes, 2018. |
| Creators on Forbes’ 2024 highest-paid-showrunners list | Five reportedly earned more than $100 million over the preceding 12 months | This is period earnings, not lifetime income or net worth, and it does not establish an all-time wealth ranking. Forbes, 2024. |
| Dick Wolf | Not stated in the source excerpt available for this comparison | Forbes identifies Wolf as the creator of Law & Order; its profile excerpt gives a wealth-date of September 10, 2026, but not an amount. No figure should be inferred from that date. Forbes profile. |
These entries cannot be sorted into a reliable richest-to-least-rich order: they span different years and categories, and one gives no amount. In particular, the $1.5 billion deal should not be added to or substituted for Stone’s or Parker’s estimated wealth, and the 2024 earnings figure cannot be compared directly with Rhimes’ 2018 net-worth estimate.

Why familiar “richest creator” lists do not settle the question
A Las Vegas News list names David Chase, Shonda Rhimes, Larry David, Chuck Lorre, Dick Wolf and Jerry Seinfeld, but it frames them as creators and provides only six names. That is neither a ten-person list nor evidence that every person meets the same showrunner definition or was valued on the same basis. Las Vegas News’ list is a lead to individual estimates, not authority for a definitive ranking.
Including creators, executive producers or stars may be reasonable for a broader article about television wealth, but it changes the question. A person’s earnings from acting or other businesses can also affect net worth without showing how much wealth came from running a television series. A defensible ranking would need a stated inclusion rule, a consistent measure and date, and a source for each person’s estimate.

How to read any “richest showrunners” ranking
- Check the role. Does the list mean people who ran a series, or anyone credited as its creator, executive producer or star?
- Check the measure. Is the figure estimated net worth, earnings over a specified period, or a contract’s total value?
- Check the date. A reported estimate is a snapshot, not a permanent valuation.
- Check the source and method. A publication’s estimate is not an audited disclosure, and different sources may use different methods.
