Who Are the Richest Footballers? Why a Defensible All-Time Top 20 Is Hard to Rank

There is no defensible all-time top 20 richest footballers ranking in the available comparable figures. Net worth, seasonal earnings and family wealth are different measures.

There is no well-supported, comparable ranking of the 20 richest footballers of all time in the available figures. The answer to “Who is the richest footballer in the world?” depends on whether “richest” means a player’s personal net worth, career earnings, one season’s income or wealth associated with a family. Those measures are not interchangeable, and the available sources do not establish twenty dated personal net-worth estimates that can be ranked consistently.

Why there is no reliable all-time top 20

A ranked list requires comparable figures: the same definition of wealth, a valuation date, a currency and enough information about what each estimate includes. The available sources do not provide that consistent data set. Private assets and liabilities are not uniformly public, so published net-worth figures should be treated as estimates rather than audited personal balance sheets.

Forbes profiles for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi include a real-time net-worth field, but the available information does not establish a complete, comparable set of valuations for twenty players. A precise rank-by-rank list would therefore imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

What “richest” can mean

  • Personal net worth: a person’s assets minus liabilities. Public estimates may differ in what assets, debts and business interests they count.
  • Career earnings: income accumulated over a career. It does not account for taxes, spending, investment returns or debt, so it is not the same as current wealth.
  • Annual earnings: income over a stated season or year. It is a time-limited flow of money, not a measure of someone’s accumulated assets.
  • Family or inherited wealth: resources associated with relatives or a family’s status are not automatically the player’s personal property.

Why seasonal earnings do not answer the net-worth question

Forbes España’s 2025 list estimates Cristiano Ronaldo’s football-related package at $230 million and Lionel Messi’s earnings at $130 million for the 2025–26 season. These are seasonal earnings estimates, not net-worth valuations, so they cannot be used to rank the players by total personal wealth. See Forbes España’s 2025 list of the world’s highest-paid footballers.

Why Faiq Bolkiah is often mentioned—and what the claim establishes

Some online rankings name Faiq Bolkiah as the world’s richest footballer and repeat a $20 billion figure. Sports Mole’s 2025 ranking attributes that amount to him, while the available information connects the claim to his Brunei royal-family background; it does not verify that $20 billion is his personal net worth or property. The figure should not be presented as an established personal-wealth valuation. See Sports Mole’s ranking and Goal.com’s discussion of the richest footballer.

Why some “richest in football” lists rank different people

The scope of a list matters. FourFourTwo’s 2026 Football Rich List concerns wealthy people in football with club ownership or an active role in the game; it is not a ranking of footballers’ personal net worth. Its broader category should not be compared directly with a player-only list.

How to evaluate a published ranking

Before trusting a numbered list, check whether it defines the person being ranked and the wealth being measured. A meaningful comparison should disclose:

  • whether it ranks personal net worth, career earnings or annual income;
  • the valuation date and currency;
  • whether businesses, endorsements, property and investments are included;
  • whether inherited or family-controlled wealth is excluded; and
  • the source and basis for each estimate.

If a list mixes these categories, its order is not a like-for-like comparison. A headline ranking may still be useful as a guide to names often discussed, but it should not be mistaken for a verified all-time league table.
