Market Realist’s 2023 list of 10 screenwriters
The figures below are estimates attributed to Market Realist, not confirmed personal wealth. The article describes the writers’ careers and credits but does not provide an auditable method for calculating the estimates.

Why different rankings give different answers
A MoneySnoop ranking differs substantially: its top five are Steven Spielberg ($8 billion), J.K. Rowling ($1 billion), Peter Jackson ($998 million), Kevin Hart ($450 million) and Adam Sandler ($440 million). These are estimates listed on that page, not verified wealth disclosures. The lists do not use a stated common methodology or consistent definition of “screenwriter,” so the discrepancy shows that the ranking is unsettled; it does not establish which list is more accurate.

When comparing such lists, check the publication or update date, who qualifies as a screenwriter, whether writer-directors and television creators are included, what the figure measures, and whether the publisher explains its method or underlying data. A net-worth estimate is not the same as annual earnings, a disclosed contract payment or a film’s box-office total.

How screenwriting contracts can affect earnings
Screenwriter income can vary by project and contract. A University of York and Writers’ Guild of Great Britain report dated July 7, 2025, describes UK industry arrangements in which traditional broadcaster contracts can include a script fee, advances for later use and subsequent residual payments. In the report’s interview sample, streaming work commonly involved buyouts: a one-time payment in exchange for future rights and possible residuals.
The report cautions: “Strictly speaking, it is challenging, if not impossible, to compare screenwriters’ earnings from traditional broadcasters, which employ a residual model, to those from SVODs, which often use a buyout model.” Its findings provide context about UK contract structures; they do not establish Hollywood-wide compensation or the personal wealth of the people in either ranking.

Neither ranking establishes independently audited, current net-worth figures for the people named. Private wealth estimates may draw on assumptions that are not visible to readers, and a person’s credits or a project’s commercial success do not by themselves reveal their assets, liabilities, ownership interests or contract terms. Treat the Market Realist list as a dated set of estimates, not a definitive league table or a measure of what screenwriters generally earn.
