Bitcoin is accepted by some local shops and restaurants, online stores, charities, and selected larger businesses—but acceptance depends on the merchant and location. Start with a local directory such as BTCMap, then confirm directly with the business. At checkout, check whether the payment is Bitcoin on-chain or Lightning, and follow the merchant’s stated instructions.
Where can I spend Bitcoin?
Bitcoin.org points consumers to several routes for spending Bitcoin. A listing or example is a place to start, not a guarantee that a particular location still accepts it.
- Local businesses: Cafes, restaurants, and shops may accept Bitcoin, often over the Lightning Network for in-person payments. BTCMap lists local businesses and is a practical starting point for a nearby search. Bitcoin.org’s spending guide recommends checking local listings.
- Selected larger chains: Bitcoin.org names U.S. restaurant chain Steak ‘n Shake as an example of a business accepting Lightning payments. Check with the specific location before ordering; a chain-wide example does not establish that every branch or transaction supports it.
- Online stores: Some stores offer Bitcoin or Lightning at checkout, sometimes through a payment processor. The checkout may show a QR code or payment link to use with a wallet. Galaxy Mind maintains a manually verified directory of independent online stores with last-confirmed dates; treat those dates as useful context, not a promise that the option remains available. Galaxy Mind.
- Donations: Bitcoin.org lists the Hal Finney ALS/MND Research Fund, OpenSats, and the Human Rights Foundation as Bitcoin donation recipients. It describes OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation as funders of open-source Bitcoin development. Check each organization’s official donation instructions before sending funds.
Which stores accept Bitcoin near me?
Search a location-filtered directory such as BTCMap, then check the individual business. BTCMap is an open-data map, and directory entries can become outdated. BTCAccepted identifies BTCMap/OpenStreetMap as its data source and cautions users to verify information with businesses directly. BTCAccepted.
- Search the map for the business’s address and category. Read any payment-method or last-verified details shown.
- Before traveling, check the business’s own website or social page, or contact the location. Ask whether it accepts Bitcoin now and whether it uses on-chain Bitcoin or Lightning.
- Ask whether payment goes through a processor and whether you need a particular wallet or app. Payment options can differ between locations, terminals, or online and in-person purchases.
Can I pay with Bitcoin online?
At an online checkout, look for Bitcoin or Lightning as a specific payment option, rather than a general “crypto” label. Read the displayed instructions before paying: they should identify the payment route and provide the QR code, address, or payment link needed by your wallet. Do not assume that a merchant accepting another cryptocurrency also accepts Bitcoin.

What to check before sending Bitcoin
- Payment route: Confirm whether the merchant accepts Bitcoin on-chain, Lightning, or both. A wallet must support the route the merchant requests.
- Merchant and location: Make sure the option applies to the specific location and purchase you are making, rather than relying on an old listing or a general chain reference.
- Processor and settlement: If a payment service is involved, read the checkout terms to see whether the merchant receives Bitcoin or local currency and whether the service adds conditions.
- Fees and limits: Review any fee, minimum, maximum, or transaction limit displayed by the merchant or provider. These terms are provider- and location-specific and can change.
- Refunds and disputes: Check how the merchant handles returns and payment problems before completing the transaction. Do not assume a card-style chargeback process applies.
- Gift-card terms: For an indirect purchase, confirm regional availability, eligible retailer, expiry or other redemption conditions, and refund rules.
Merchant services do not mean every merchant accepts Bitcoin
Businesses may accept payments themselves or use a payment service. Bitcoin.org says merchants can settle in local currency or Bitcoin and advises them to seek qualified accounting guidance for tax compliance in their jurisdiction. Bitcoin.org’s business guide.
Provider terms illustrate why availability should be checked rather than generalized. Square’s U.S. seller documentation says eligibility is determined by its system and Bitcoin payments are unavailable to businesses or locations in New York. For eligible U.S. sellers, the page describes a QR-code payment option; on Square Register (2nd generation), it also describes NFC payment from a Lightning-enabled wallet. Square’s page states that processing is 0% through December 31, 2026, then 1%, and lists an individual maximum equivalent to $600 and a $20,000 daily limit. It also says Square does not handle disputes or chargebacks for Bitcoin payments. These are terms of Square’s U.S. service, not rules for Bitcoin payments generally; consult Square’s current U.S. documentation for eligibility and live terms.
