Before uploading, confirm you own the material, that your course permits resale, and that the platform accepts sellers in your country. The available information supports comparing these three examples; it does not establish a current, verified list of 12 recommended places.
How selling study notes online works
Most note-selling services let you upload a study document, describe or categorize it, and make it available to potential buyers. Depending on the platform, you may set a price and earn a share when someone buys it, or receive compensation under a different access model. A listing is not a guaranteed source of income: sales depend on whether students need the material, whether they find it useful, and how the marketplace handles discovery and access.
Before choosing a service, compare its seller eligibility and country coverage, fees, payout threshold and schedule, permitted content, buyer access model, and how it previews or protects documents. Terms below are platform statements and can change, so check the live seller pages before joining.

DocMerit also reported an average seller payment of $16.15 for July 2026. That is a platform-published figure, not an independently audited estimate or a forecast of what a new seller will earn; the page does not define how the average was calculated. Stuvia’s US page advertises more than one million monthly students, over six million documents added in the past two years, and more than $32 million paid out since 2010. Those are Stuvia’s own scale claims, not evidence of a beginner’s likely sales.

Stuvia’s UK page says it paid sellers £3,000,000 in 2025 and reports 40,000 new sellers, 750,000 documents listed, and buyers in 127 countries that year. These are the company’s retrospective figures, not independent audit results or typical earnings. Stuvia UK seller page
How to get started
- Review your rights and course rules. Check who owns the notes, your syllabus, your institution’s intellectual-property rules, and the platform’s upload policy before preparing a listing.
- Choose a marketplace by its terms, not its biggest earnings claim. Check that it accepts sellers in your country, then compare commission or revenue share, transaction charges, minimum price, payout threshold, payment method, and timing.
- Prepare material you created and are allowed to distribute. Remove personal information and do not include instructors’ slides, textbook scans, or other material you do not have the right to sell.
- Make the listing useful and accurate. Identify the subject and scope clearly, describe what the document covers, and avoid implying that it is official course material or guaranteed to match a future exam.
- Set a price and monitor the result. Account for fees and payout conditions when choosing a price. A listing may receive few or no sales; adjust only when the platform’s rules allow it and the description remains accurate.
Can you legally sell your class notes?
There is no single rule in this material that applies to every course or jurisdiction. The key distinction is between notes you created yourself and material owned by an instructor, publisher, institution, or another party. A marketplace allowing an upload does not by itself mean you have permission to distribute every item in it.

Stuvia says that uploading does not transfer the creator’s copyright and that buyers may use purchased documents personally. Its rules say sellers may list only work whose copyright they own; they prohibit complete books, teachers’ presentation slides or other instructor work, and content belonging to institutions or official organizations. Stuvia also prohibits reselling documents from its own platform or competitors and warns sellers not to include personal data. These are Stuvia’s rules, not universal rules for every marketplace. Course policies can add restrictions even when you wrote the notes. A University of Arizona syllabus compilation gives this course-specific example: “Selling class notes and/or other course materials to other students or to a third party for resale is not permitted without the instructor’s express written consent.” The passage says violations may be subject to academic-integrity sanctions and may constitute copyright infringement. For your own course, read the syllabus and institutional intellectual-property policy, ask the instructor if the rules are unclear, and follow the marketplace’s terms. If you cannot establish that you have permission to sell a document or its contents, do not list it.
Is selling notes likely to make money?
It can generate income, but no platform figure here establishes what a beginner is likely to earn. Sales depend on the usefulness and accuracy of the notes, demand for the subject, competition, buyer discovery, price, and the platform’s fees and payout rules. A reported platform-wide payment, maximum advertised amount, or scale figure is not a personal earnings estimate.

Treat note sales as uncertain side income rather than guaranteed passive income. Keep records of sales and expenses and check any tax obligations that apply where you live; the platform examples above do not establish tax treatment.

The three examples above are a starting point for comparing different monetization models, not a ranking. A service is a sensible fit only if its current rules allow your material and its fees, payment method, and buyer-access model work for you.
