The strongest historically supported candidate in the available evidence is a well-maintained W123, particularly a diesel; the W126 also has a reputation for durable engines and drivetrains when properly maintained. The W124, W210 and W211 are identifiable generations worth researching, but the cited evidence does not establish them—or ten exact model-and-engine combinations—as lifetime cars.
For a personal-finance decision, treat reputation as a reason to investigate, not a substitute for records, a specialist inspection and a realistic repair budget. A neglected example can turn a seemingly affordable purchase into an expensive one.
Why a responsible shortlist cannot promise ten lifetime cars
The available sources support discussion of five Mercedes-Benz generations, not a reliable ranking of ten specific model, year and engine combinations. They do not provide comparable failure rates, expected lifespans or current survival data for those configurations. Splitting generations into extra entries would create the appearance of evidence that is not there.
Mercedes-Benz’s W123 history page reports 2,717,898 vehicles produced and says 70% were still in circulation after twenty years. It also describes individual examples in Morocco and Greece that exceeded one million kilometers. Those are historical statements from the manufacturer, not a current survival survey, a rate for any particular engine or a forecast for a car on sale today. The page’s headline, “La Stella più affidabile” (“The most reliable star”), is promotional language, not an independent comparative test.

The Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s buyer guides add useful context: the W123’s reputation, especially for diesels, is tied to mechanical fortitude and repairability, while its W126 guide describes engines and drivetrains as robust and long-lived with proper maintenance. Both points depend on upkeep. Neither guide establishes a guaranteed lifespan or controlled reliability statistic.
Which Mercedes generations merit investigation?
Use these as research leads, not a ranking or a promise. Production dates identify the generations; they do not prove that every year, engine, body style or market version is equally durable.
W123, especially a diesel
This is the best-supported durability candidate in the cited material. The Mercedes-Benz Club of America describes W123s, especially diesels, as desirable for mechanical fortitude, repairability and reliability. Look for a specific car with convincing maintenance records and sound structure. The same buyer guide notes that newer, safer and more practical Mercedes options exist, so a W123’s reputation alone does not make it the right everyday car.

W126
The Club’s W126 buyer guide characterizes its engines and drivetrains as robust and long-lived when properly maintained. It also warns that maintenance deficiencies may escape a casual viewing and that genuine parts can be expensive. For a buyer, that makes documented upkeep and a knowledgeable pre-purchase inspection especially important; the guide’s assessment is not a measured failure-rate comparison.

W124 sedan and wagon, 1984–1996
Mercedes-Benz’s model-history page identifies the W124 sedan and wagon production period as 1984–1996. The cited source establishes the generation and body styles, not a reliability ranking or a winning engine-and-year combination. Treat a W124 as a configuration-specific prospect and verify the particular car rather than assuming every W124 shares the same durability.
W210 E-Class, 1995–2002
Mercedes-Benz identifies the 210 series as an E-Class generation produced from 1995 to 2002. The cited history page provides those dates, not evidence that the generation is more or less reliable than the W123, W126 or W124. Research the exact car’s service history, condition and local repair support before comparing it with older candidates.

W211 E-Class, 2002–2009
The same Mercedes-Benz model-history page dates the 211 series to 2002–2009. That is useful for identifying the generation, but the cited material does not rank its reliability or validate a particular engine or year for lifetime ownership. A well-documented individual example may merit consideration; the generation name is not a guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge the purchase as a financial decision
Compare actual cars on evidence and likely ownership demands, not on a reputation label. A cheaper asking price does not establish lower total cost: missed maintenance, condition problems or difficult-to-source parts can change the economics after purchase. The cited sources do not provide current prices or repair-cost estimates, so use local quotes and vehicle-specific inspection findings rather than a generic cost forecast.
- Records: Request dated service invoices, oil-change history and mileage records. Check whether the chronology across documents and owners makes sense; missing proof is a reason to increase caution, not to assume maintenance was done.
- Identity and paperwork: Match the chassis and engine numbers to the vehicle documents and relevant service or parts information. Confirm that the seller is the registered owner and check the title and registration requirements for your jurisdiction.
- Physical condition: Have a mechanic familiar with the chassis inspect the body and underbody, accident condition, engine and transmission. The W126 buyer guide specifically cautions that some maintenance problems are not apparent in a casual inspection.
- Ownership fit: Before committing, establish whether qualified specialists and the parts you may need are accessible in your region, and whether the car’s safety and practicality suit how you will use it.
- Repair reserve: Base your post-purchase reserve on the inspection, records and local estimates. Do not let an attractive purchase price consume the money needed to address known or imminent work.
What to check before you buy
Mercedes-Benz Classic’s vehicle-evaluation checklist is a useful documentary starting point. It prompts buyers to review official vehicle documents, service and oil-change history, mileage and downtime records, prior-owner or background documentation, the owner’s manual and data card, chassis and engine numbers, and whether the seller is the registered owner. It is a checklist, not a substitute for a mechanical inspection or local legal checks.
- Collect the paperwork. Ask for the vehicle documents, service invoices, mileage history, owner’s manual and data card where available. Compare dates, recorded mileage and ownership chronology.
- Verify the car’s identity. Match chassis and engine numbers against the paperwork and determine what service and parts information applies to that exact car and market.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified mechanic familiar with the relevant chassis; ask for findings in writing and seek estimates for material work before negotiating.
- Check parts and service access. Mercedes-Benz Classic offers a genuine-parts channel, but availability and fitment must be confirmed for the particular chassis and market. Mercedes-Benz describes XENTRY WIS as current repair and maintenance information; its WIS Classic material includes documentation for series 123, 124, 126, 201 and 210. The source describes workshop information and does not promise retail or consumer access.
- Decide using the full ownership picture. Weigh the documented condition, likely repairs, parts access, daily usability and specialist support against the purchase price and your budget. Walk away if the evidence needed to make that decision is missing or the risk exceeds your reserve.
Mercedes-Benz says its factory birth-documentation service covers classic cars from 1986 to 2010; that stated range does not establish coverage for every W123. Confirm eligibility directly before relying on it to fill gaps in a car’s history.
