ARM announced its acquisition of Norwegian graphics company Falanx Microsystems AS on June 23, 2006. Based in Trondheim, Falanx developed graphics intellectual property; Arm later identified its team as the origin of Mali graphics technology.
What company did ARM acquire?
Falanx Microsystems AS was a privately owned graphics-IP company headquartered in Trondheim, Norway. ARM’s announcement described the acquisition as a way to strengthen its 3D graphics portfolio. It reported Falanx’s net assets as NOK 2 million, a figure that is not the same as the purchase price; the announcement does not state the acquisition price. ARM’s June 23, 2006 announcement was carried by WebWire.
When did the acquisition happen?
ARM announced the acquisition on June 23, 2006. Arm’s later account dates its announcement to June 2006. The sources establish the announcement date, but do not provide a separate closing date.
How did Falanx lead to Mali graphics?
Arm traces the beginnings of the Falanx team to 1998, when students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology shifted from experimenting with CPUs to graphics. According to Arm, the Trondheim team created Mali before Falanx became part of the company. In a 2016 retrospective marking Mali’s tenth anniversary, Arm described the acquisition as the moment “ARM Mali was born.” Arm’s 2016 retrospective provides its account of that lineage.

What did the deal mean for ARM’s presence in Norway?
Arm says the Falanx acquisition established its presence in Norway. In a May 2023 post, it described continuing graphics engineering work in Trondheim and plans for a graphics-focused site in Oslo. Arm reported that its Trondheim office had more than 200 employees at that time; that is a 2023 figure, not a current headcount. Arm’s 2023 account of its engineering expansion gives those details.
