Neither store is better for fishing across the board. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s have been part of the same combined company since their 2016 combination, so the practical question is which nearby store carries the gear you need, at the lowest total price, with the help you want. Bass Pro Shops has the stronger fishing identity. When the company announced the combination in October 2016, it described Bass Pro Shops as a fishing leader and Cabela’s as a hunting leader. That was the company’s positioning at the time, not a current ranking, and it does not mean every Bass Pro location beats every Cabela’s location for fishing.
Why the two names still get compared
The company said in October 2016 that the two brands’ product offerings and geographic footprints were complementary. In practice, that means the two chains overlap less than their names suggest: one store may be a short drive away while the other is across the state. What you will mostly encounter is store-by-store variation, because the company says its locations are tailored to local landscapes and that no two are the same.
Store count and where you can shop
The company’s current retail page reports more than 170 combined Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s locations and links to a store lookup tool. That count is company-reported, as of the page’s access date of October 8, 2026, and it changes as stores open or close. Both brands also sell online, so a store visit is optional for many purchases.
What the fishing assortment shows and what it does not
The company’s March 2025 Spring Classic announcement listed fishing and outdoor categories on sale and gave examples. Those examples are useful for seeing the range of products the company promotes, but they are dated promotion examples. They are not a price list, an inventory audit, or a guarantee that a given item is on a shelf near you.

No current, cited head-to-head inventory comparison shows one chain carries a deeper fishing selection than the other. If the exact rod, reel, or tackle matters to you, the only reliable check is the store’s own stock.
Rewards and total cost
For a budget-minded angler, the loyalty program often matters as much as the sticker price. The Outdoor Rewards help page says points can be earned at either retailer and redeemed for merchandise at either retailer. Separate CLUB Mastercard material describes tiered rewards at both brands. Because these terms can change, check the current Outdoor Rewards rules and the card’s terms before relying on a specific reward rate.

Rewards only help if you would otherwise buy the item. A card that earns points on a rod purchase costs more than it saves if you carry a balance, because interest on the balance can exceed the value of the points. Pay the statement in full before counting rewards as a discount.
Events and in-store help
The March 2025 announcement described location-specific seminars with local pro anglers and company Outfitters discussing equipment, techniques, and local waters. That is a company description of what some locations offered in 2025. It does not show that every store runs the same events, and it does not show that staff at one brand know more about fishing than staff at the other. If advice matters to you, call the store and ask whether it runs fishing seminars this season and whether staff know the waters you plan to fish.

How to compare before you buy
- Define the trip. Write down the target species, the water type (lake, river, surf, or offshore), and the technique. A rod power and action that suits one technique may be wrong for another.
- Shortlist two stores. Use the company’s store lookup to find the two locations you could reach, one from each chain if both are nearby.
- Check the exact model online or by phone. A chain-wide reputation cannot tell you what is on the shelf at one location. Confirm the model number, not just the brand.
- Compare the full cost. Use the same model at each store, add shipping or pickup costs, and count any current promotion and reward value. Do not reuse the March 2025 promotion examples as current prices; that promotion has expired.
- Ask about help. Check whether each store has seminars, local fishing knowledge, or staff who can answer questions about your waters.
- Weigh the drive. Compare the travel cost and time against the price difference. A saving of a few dollars rarely justifies a long drive.
Which store to choose in practice
- If the nearest store has your exact model in stock at the lowest total cost, buy there. Stock and price at one location outweigh the brand’s historical identity.
- If the nearest store lacks the model but the other chain’s store is within a reasonable drive, compare the drive against the price gap before deciding.
- If you want local-water advice or seminars, call ahead. Event schedules are location-specific and change by season.
- If you plan to use a rewards card, pay the balance in full so that interest does not erase the rewards.
The available sources do not establish a universal winner across selection, price, service, and convenience. The right store is the one that meets your specific fishing needs at the lowest total cost for your location.
Also, the donation figure cited by the company in its March 3, 2025 announcement, nearly 500,000 rods, reels, and other fishing items donated to youth-focused nonprofit organizations since the program began in 2015, is a company-reported number. It is not independently verified and does not bear on which store serves your fishing best.
