Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay can work with PayPal—but not in the same way. Google Pay supports a direct PayPal-account connection in certain markets and use cases, while Apple Pay and Samsung Pay generally support eligible PayPal-branded cards. Venmo accounts cannot currently be linked directly to PayPal.

Linking a PayPal account is different from adding a PayPal card
There are two different meanings of “link PayPal to a digital wallet”:

- Account linking: the wallet or supported checkout connects to your PayPal account as a funding source.
- Card addition: you add a PayPal-branded debit or credit card to the wallet, which then processes payments through that card.
This distinction matters. Adding a PayPal Debit Mastercard to Apple Wallet does not necessarily make your PayPal Balance appear as a balance inside Apple Pay. Similarly, a bank card stored in your PayPal account does not automatically become a PayPal card that can be added to a mobile wallet.

PayPal’s current help documentation identifies the direct account connection for in-store purchases in the United States and Germany, as well as online purchases through the Google Store and other Google properties. For an in-store purchase using the directly linked account, PayPal says you should have sufficient funds in your PayPal Balance. That does not establish that every linked bank account or credit card will work identically through this connection.

How to add PayPal to Google Pay
- Open Google Pay or Google Wallet.
- Choose the option to add a payment method.
- Select PayPal if it is offered for your account and region.
- Sign in and complete the verification steps.
If the PayPal option is missing, you may be outside a supported market, using an unsupported device or account configuration, or trying to use a feature that is unavailable for your purchase type. You can also add an eligible PayPal debit or credit card as a regular wallet card.
PayPal with Apple Pay
Apple Pay supports eligible PayPal-branded cards, not a universal direct connection to any PayPal Balance account. PayPal specifically promotes adding the PayPal Debit Mastercard to Apple Wallet, and its U.S. help page lists several eligible PayPal products.
PayPal’s listed eligible cards include:
- PayPal Debit Mastercard
- PayPal Business Debit Mastercard
- PayPal Cashback Mastercard
- PayPal Extras Mastercard
- PayPal Credit Card
Eligibility can vary by country, device, card product, and issuer rules. PayPal’s Apple Pay setup page and mobile-wallet compatibility guidance are the relevant checks.

How to add a PayPal card to Apple Wallet
- Open the PayPal app and select Accounts, or open Apple Wallet.
- Select the eligible PayPal card.
- Tap Add to Apple Wallet, or use Wallet’s add-card control.
- Complete any identity or issuer verification.
The exact PayPal menu may instead appear under Me → Accounts → PayPal Debit Card → Add to Apple Wallet. Labels can change with the app version and card type.
PayPal with Samsung Pay
Samsung Pay can accept eligible PayPal-branded cards, subject to Samsung-device, country, card, and issuer limitations. The available documentation supports adding a card; it should not be treated as confirmation that a general PayPal account or PayPal Balance can be linked directly to Samsung Pay.

- Open Samsung Pay on a compatible Samsung device.
- Choose the option to add a payment card.
- Enter or scan the details of an eligible PayPal card.
- Complete PayPal, issuer, or Samsung verification.
If the card cannot be added, check whether the product is one of PayPal’s named eligible cards and whether the card and device are supported in your country.
Which PayPal cards work with mobile wallets?
PayPal’s U.S. help documentation names the following products as eligible for Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay:

Do not assume that every card visible in your PayPal Wallet is eligible for Apple Pay, Google Wallet, or Samsung Pay.

Can you link PayPal to Venmo?
No—not as a direct connection between personal accounts. PayPal’s consumer help documentation says PayPal and Venmo accounts cannot currently be linked directly. You should use the two services separately rather than expect one balance or account to appear inside the other.
Venmo may still appear as a payment option for some U.S. merchants using PayPal’s payment services. That is a merchant-checkout integration, not a link between your personal PayPal and Venmo accounts. PayPal describes these consumer and merchant relationships separately in its Venmo help page and merchant payment-method documentation.
Choose the right option for your situation
- iPhone with a PayPal card: Add the eligible card to Apple Wallet.
- Android phone with a PayPal card: Use Google Wallet, or Samsung Pay on a compatible Samsung device.
- U.S. or German user with only PayPal Balance: Check whether Google Pay offers the documented direct PayPal-account connection.
- Want to spend PayPal Balance in a phone wallet: A PayPal Debit Mastercard may be the relevant card-based route, but availability and transaction rules still apply.
- Venmo user: Use Venmo separately; a direct PayPal-account link is not currently available.
What you can buy with the connection
Depending on the wallet, card, device, merchant, and country, you may be able to use the setup for contactless in-store payments, online wallet checkout, or purchases on Google properties. PayPal does not promise that a PayPal connection works everywhere the underlying wallet works.
For example, adding a PayPal card to a wallet does not guarantee acceptance at every merchant, and directly linking PayPal to Google Pay does not make every PayPal funding source available for every transaction. The merchant must offer the wallet, and the card or account connection must be supported for that transaction.
Troubleshooting PayPal wallet-linking problems
“PayPal is not showing as an option”
Check your country, phone, operating system, wallet app, account type, and purchase context. You may be looking for account linking when only card addition is supported, or your PayPal card may not be an eligible product. PayPal also says availability can vary by device and region, and security systems may restrict a payment method.

“I added the card, but my PayPal Balance is not visible”
That is expected in many card-based setups. A PayPal-branded card in a wallet is not necessarily the same as exposing the PayPal account balance directly. The card may be processed through its card network, while the direct Google Pay account connection is a separate feature.
“My PayPal card failed verification”
Confirm that your PayPal account details and billing information are current, then follow the wallet’s issuer-verification process. If verification still fails, contact PayPal or the card issuer rather than repeatedly submitting the card.
“Can I use PayPal Credit everywhere after adding it?”
No universal guarantee applies. PayPal lists PayPal Credit Card as an eligible product for supported wallets, but actual use remains subject to the wallet, merchant, device, issuer, and transaction restrictions.
International purchases and fees
Fees depend on the country, account, card, and transaction. For U.S. PayPal users, the PayPal Balance Terms disclose a 2.50% international transaction fee for using PayPal in Google Pay and Samsung Pay for purchases from non-U.S. merchants. This U.S.-specific disclosure should not be generalized to every country or PayPal product.
Consumer wallet linking versus merchant acceptance
These are separate questions:
- Consumer question: Can I add PayPal or a PayPal card to my phone’s wallet?
- Merchant question: Can a business accept PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, or another digital-wallet method through PayPal’s payment platform?
A merchant’s ability to offer PayPal-powered wallet checkout does not mean you can connect your personal PayPal account to that wallet. PayPal notes that merchant payment-method availability varies by integration and geography.
