There is no evidence-based universal winner among Plus Wallet, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet and Phantom. Choose only after confirming that the wallet gives you the custody arrangement you want and supports your exact asset on its exact network. The available official documentation describes Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet and Phantom; it does not establish Plus Wallet’s custody, network support or security features, so those details need verification before you rely on it.
Start with the custody trade-off
A custodial exchange manages the private keys associated with customers’ assets. A self-custody wallet puts control of the keys and recovery credentials with the user. Coinbase’s explainer, “Exchanges and self-custody wallets,” describes self-custody as direct control over crypto; it also explains the consequence: if you lose the recovery phrase, you may lose access.
That responsibility matters for holdings you plan to keep. Self-custody can give you direct control, but you must protect your recovery method, use the right wallet and network, and review transactions yourself. A wallet’s security features can reduce some risks, but they do not remove the need for care.
Compare what is established about each wallet
| Wallet | Custody and recovery | Documented network or device details | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus Wallet | Not stated in an attributable official source available for this comparison. | Supported networks, security features and hardware-wallet compatibility are not stated in an attributable official source available for this comparison. | Find current official documentation for custody, recovery, the precise asset and network, and security controls before depositing funds. |
| Trust Wallet | Trust Wallet describes itself as self-custodial and says it does not access or store users’ private keys. | Its security page describes a Security Scanner, encrypted cloud backups and hardware-wallet connections. The available documentation here does not establish a specific network list or device compatibility details. | Check the current app for your exact asset and network, and confirm how its recovery and backup options work for your setup. |
| Coinbase Wallet | Coinbase describes Coinbase Wallet as self-custodial and says Coinbase cannot access tokens without the user’s recovery phrase. This is distinct from a Coinbase exchange account, where the exchange manages keys. | Coinbase documents Ledger compatibility for its browser extension. Its supported-assets page distinguishes smart wallets, email/social-login wallets and mnemonic wallets, and some advanced features are limited to Ethereum and Polygon. | Confirm your wallet type and the current supported-asset and network listing. Coinbase says some networks stopped being supported after August 15, 2026. |
| Phantom | Phantom says wallets can use a Secret Recovery Phrase or Google/Apple login, with local device authentication. | Its current documentation lists Solana, Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, Arc, HyperEVM, Bitcoin (Native Segwit/Taproot), Base, Polygon and BNB Chain. It names Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche and Unichain among unsupported networks. Hardware wallets are supported, with models and connection methods varying by app and extension. | Check the current supported-chain and hardware compatibility pages for your specific network, device and Phantom version. |
These are descriptions from the providers’ own documentation, not independent comparative security audits. For example, Trust Wallet’s security page reports “over 200 million Trust Wallet users,” but does not give a publication year or methodology there; treat it as a company-reported figure, not a verified measure of security or suitability.

Check asset and network support, not just the wallet name
A wallet may support one network or wallet type without supporting another. Confirm the exact token and chain in the version of the wallet you will use, then check that the receiving address is meant for that network. Coinbase’s “Supported assets and networks in Coinbase Wallet” page distinguishes among wallet types and records network-support changes effective August 15, 2026. It advises users affected by discontinued network support to move recovery phrases to a wallet that supports the network.
Phantom’s list is also a dated product snapshot, not a promise that every asset on a listed chain is supported or that the list will remain unchanged. Do not send an asset over a network Phantom identifies as unsupported; consult Phantom’s official recovery guidance if funds are already involved.

Choose based on your use case
If you want direct control of keys
Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet and Phantom all describe self-custody arrangements, though their recovery methods and supported ecosystems differ. Decide first whether you can responsibly safeguard the recovery credentials. Coinbase distinguishes Coinbase Wallet from its exchange service; do not assume that keeping assets in one means the same custody arrangement as the other.
If you use a particular chain or token
Start with the token and network you actually hold, not a broad claim that a wallet “supports crypto.” Phantom publishes a specific chain list, while Coinbase’s support varies by wallet type and has changed for some networks. For Trust Wallet and Plus Wallet, verify current official support for the exact asset and chain directly before transferring.

If hardware signing is important
Phantom documents support for hardware wallets, and Coinbase documents Ledger compatibility for its browser extension. Those facts do not establish that every device works on every platform or network; check current compatibility details for the exact setup. Hardware wallets keep keys offline while allowing wallet actions through a connected wallet interface, but they cannot prevent scams, mistaken approvals or loss of credentials.
Before you transfer
- Identify the wallet and wallet type. For Coinbase Wallet, distinguish smart, email/social-login and mnemonic wallet types; do not confuse the self-custody wallet with the Coinbase exchange.
- Confirm the exact asset and network. Check the wallet’s current official support information and the app or extension you will actually use. If the network is unsupported or unclear, do not send.
- Verify the destination. Confirm that the receiving address is intended for that network and asset, and review the address and transaction details before approving.
- Understand recovery. Know which recovery method your wallet uses and keep it private. Phantom warns users not to share recovery phrases or private keys; anyone who obtains them may be able to access the wallet.
- Check hardware compatibility if applicable. Confirm the specific device, platform and network are supported in the wallet’s current documentation.
Use security features as safeguards, not guarantees
Trust Wallet describes a Security Scanner, encrypted cloud backups, independent audits and security monitoring. Phantom describes transaction previews, scam and spam protection, and a malicious-site blocklist. Phantom explicitly cautions that these tools do not replace careful review of sites, signature requests and transactions. Feature descriptions from wallet providers are useful for comparing controls, but they do not prove that a wallet is safest or guarantee that funds cannot be lost.
