Mazda had the fewest recalls in 2024 in a consumer-vehicle comparison that included manufacturers producing at least 30,000 vehicles: six. The same comparison lists Rivian at eight, Porsche at 13, Toyota and Tesla at 16 each, and Nissan at 18. These are figures from Brady Reilly & Cardoso LLC (BRC), not a reconciled official ranking of every automaker.
Automakers with the fewest recalls in 2024
BRC’s comparison, updated in 2025, counts recall campaigns for consumer-vehicle manufacturers that produced at least 30,000 vehicles. It reports the following low-count results:

The 30,000-vehicle production threshold is part of the comparison’s method; it excludes lower-volume manufacturers from this particular list. The figures are US-focused, where the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) oversees federal vehicle safety recalls. BRC’s 2024 recall comparison
Why published 2024 recall counts differ
Year-end summaries do not agree on every automaker’s total. Pickup Truck Talk’s January 1, 2025, summary attributes its figures to NHTSA and reports Ford at 64 recalls, General Motors at 33, and Tesla at 15. BRC reports Ford at 67, GM at 34, and Tesla at 16. The two sources also differ on some other manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz. They do not reconcile the differences campaign by campaign, so their figures should not be combined into a single definitive ranking.

For context, Pickup Truck Talk lists Chrysler/Stellantis at 72, BMW at 36, Mercedes-Benz USA at 27, Hyundai at 25, Jaguar Land Rover at 20, Kia at 19, and Volkswagen and Honda at 18 each. NHTSA’s own 2024 Annual Report: Safety Recalls, published in April 2025, presents recall data by recall year. Its charts have specific scopes: for example, the introductory long-run chart covers vehicle recalls and excludes tires, child seats, and equipment. A number taken from one chart should not be assumed to include the same categories as every other NHTSA table.

What a recall count tells you—and what it does not
A recall count measures campaigns or actions, not the number of vehicles affected. One campaign may cover a large fleet; several campaigns may affect fewer vehicles. NHTSA reports affected-vehicle totals separately, and remedy availability and repair completion are also distinct from the number of campaigns. NHTSA’s annual report
A low campaign count alone does not show that a manufacturer’s cars are safer or more reliable. Raw totals can be shaped by fleet size, sales, model range, vehicle age, defect detection, and how campaigns are grouped. BRC itself cautions that fewer recalls do not necessarily establish that a manufacturer makes the safest cars. A fair comparison needs to make clear:

- Which country and regulator the figures cover.
- Whether they refer to calendar year or recall year.
- Whether the number counts campaigns or affected vehicles.
- Which vehicle and equipment categories are included.
- How brands are grouped under parent manufacturers.
- Whether totals are adjusted for production or fleet size.
The cited sources do not provide a fully reconciled ranking normalized by fleet size or production. For an owner, affected-vehicle count, defect severity, remedy availability, and repair completion matter alongside campaign totals.

- Go to NHTSA.gov/Recalls and enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) in the recall lookup.
- Review any results for the specific vehicle and follow the remedy instructions. Contact a dealer or manufacturer if you need help arranging a repair.
- For alerts, NHTSA says its free SaferCar app can notify you when a recall appears for a saved vehicle. Its recall dashboard can also be filtered by manufacturer.
NHTSA says a vehicle recall never expires. A manufacturer count cannot tell you whether your particular car is affected; the VIN lookup is the relevant check.
