Among three major U.S. carriers, American reports nine hub groupings, Delta describes nine hub positions, and United lists eight hub airports. Those figures are not directly equivalent because New York’s airports, in particular, are grouped differently.
What the counts show
The comparison below uses each airline’s own published description. It is not a standardized ranking of distinct airports, and it does not establish which airline has the most hubs worldwide.
| Airline | Published count | How the source presents the count | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | 9 hub groupings | Groups New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports together as one hub grouping. | Current American Airlines newsroom page; year not stated, accessed 2026. |
| Delta Air Lines | 4 core hubs and 5 coastal hub positions | Lists New York-JFK and New York-LaGuardia separately among its coastal positions. | Fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026. |
| United Airlines | 8 hub airports | Names eight specific airports. | Fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026. |
Which hubs each airline names
American Airlines
American identifies Charlotte (CLT), Chicago (ORD), Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK and LGA), Philadelphia (PHL), Phoenix (PHX), and Washington, D.C. (DCA) as its nine hub groupings. American’s newsroom list groups JFK and LaGuardia under New York.
Delta Air Lines
Delta’s fiscal 2025 filing describes four core hubs—Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis–St. Paul, and Salt Lake City—and five coastal hub positions: Boston, Los Angeles, New York-LaGuardia, New York-JFK, and Seattle. Its nine positions therefore treat the two New York airports separately. Delta’s 2025 Form 10-K is the source for this categorization.

United Airlines
United’s fiscal 2025 filing names Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Denver (DEN), Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark Liberty (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), Washington Dulles (IAD), and Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam (GUM). These are eight named hub airports in United’s 2025 Form 10-K.
Why “most hubs” depends on the definition
A hub can mean a city or metro-area grouping designated by an airline, or a specific airport. Those units produce different counts when a carrier serves a city through multiple airports: American counts New York JFK and LGA as one grouping, while Delta lists them as separate positions. Counting cities for one airline and airports for another would not be an apples-to-apples comparison.

There are also threshold-based ways to describe airport hubs, rather than relying on an airline’s own labels. FAA docket material illustrates that kind of approach, but the cited sources do not establish a single global standard that can be applied consistently across airlines.
Does “largest airline hub” mean the airline with the most hubs?
No. “Largest airline hub” usually refers to the scale of one airport operation; “airline with the most hubs” asks how many hubs a carrier has. Delta describes Atlanta as the world’s largest airline hub on its corporate fact page. That claim concerns Atlanta, not Delta’s count of hub locations.

What can be concluded
For these three major U.S. carriers, American reports nine hub groupings, Delta describes nine core and coastal positions, and United lists eight hub airports. The sources use different counting conventions, so they do not settle which has the most distinct hub airports. They also do not support a comprehensive global ranking. Treat the figures as carrier-reported descriptions, not a definitive league table.
