American Airlines had the most scheduled flights in OAG’s global comparison for calendar 2024, with 2.2 million one-way flights. That figure counts scheduled flight segments—not necessarily flights completed—and applies to the airlines covered in OAG’s comparison.
Which airline had the most flights?
OAG’s 2025 analysis of calendar 2024 schedules names American Airlines as the leader by scheduled flight count, at 2.2 million one-way flights. OAG says its “top airlines of 2024” are ranked using OAG Takeoff data and compares scheduled seat capacity, total flights, available seat kilometers (ASKs), number of routes and fleet size. OAG’s 2024 airline rankings.
The 2.2 million figure is a rounded annual schedule count. It should not be read as a count of flights that actually took off or landed: scheduled service and completed operations are different measures.
What “largest by number of flights” means
A flight-count ranking measures frequency: it counts scheduled one-way flight segments. It does not, by itself, tell you how many passengers an airline carried, how much total seating capacity it offered, or how far its available seats traveled.

OAG’s other measures produce different leaders for calendar 2024:
| Measure | Leader | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled flights | American Airlines | 2.2 million one-way flights |
| Scheduled seat capacity | American Airlines | Leader; a seat total is not stated here |
| Available seat kilometers (ASKs) | United Airlines | 507.1 billion ASKs |
| Number of routes | Ryanair | 5,442 routes |
| Fleet size | Delta and American Airlines, tied | 1,006 aircraft each |
OAG defines ASKs as available seats multiplied by distance flown in kilometers. This captures capacity over distance, so an airline can lead in ASKs without leading in the number of scheduled flights. These measures answer different questions; there is no single all-purpose “largest airline” ranking.

What the 2024 comparison covers
OAG reports 15.2 million one-way flights across its 20 top airlines and 2.5 billion seats of total capacity across those airlines for calendar 2024. Those totals describe the group of 20 in OAG’s comparison, not every airline worldwide. The ranking is based on OAG Takeoff data; it is not a government census of every carrier.
The time period and scope matter. For example, EUROCONTROL’s overview for the week of 4–10 August 2025 reports Ryanair Group at an average of 3,705 daily flights in its European operator table. Its global discussion places Ryanair Group fifth, easyJet Group ninth and Turkish Airlines tenth. This is a weekly average in a separate dataset, not a rival annual total directly comparable with OAG’s 2024 figure. EUROCONTROL’s overview.

How to compare airline flight rankings fairly
- Check the period. An annual total and a daily average for one week describe different windows of activity.
- Check what is counted. Scheduled flights are not automatically the same as flights actually operated.
- Check the geography. A worldwide comparison, a regional operator table and a U.S.-only ranking have different coverage.
- Check the entity. A ranking may name an individual airline or a corporate airline group; those are not necessarily interchangeable.
- Check the metric. Flights, seats, ASKs, routes and aircraft fleet size measure distinct kinds of scale.
