The Everything War: Amazon’s Ruthless Quest to Own the World and Remake Corporate Power is Wall Street Journal reporter Dana Mattioli’s critical account of Amazon’s growth, marketplace relationships, competitive practices and regulatory scrutiny. It is an investigative book, not a court ruling: its claims should be read as Mattioli’s reported account, alongside Amazon’s denials and explanations.

What is The Everything War about?

Publisher Hachette describes the book as an examination of Amazon’s expansion beyond retail, its relationships with third-party marketplace sellers, its use of business data and its competitive conduct. Mattioli’s central argument is that Amazon’s reach and practices give it advantages across markets. That is the book’s reported thesis; the publisher description does not independently establish each allegation.

The book is relevant to personal-finance readers because its account touches the economics of shopping and selling on Amazon: how marketplace fees may affect sellers, how pricing decisions are made, and what those dynamics could mean for consumers. The available reporting does not establish a general measured effect on consumer prices.

How did Mattioli report the book?

In an April 2024 GeekWire interview, Mattioli said she spent three years reporting the book and reviewed hundreds of pages of internal documents. GeekWire reported that she spoke with more than 600 people, including current and former senior Amazon leaders. Mattioli described her aim this way: “What I hope this book does is that it lifts the veil on a purposefully secretive company, that it reveals to readers just how Amazon wins all the time, and shows instances of how Amazon has its fingers on the scale. And I think we achieved that.”

The scale of reporting gives readers a sense of the book’s sourcing, but it does not make every contested claim a settled fact. Amazon disputed some assertions in the interview.

What does Mattioli say about seller data and Amazon’s response?

One area of dispute is whether Amazon used non-public information about marketplace sellers to compete against them. Mattioli’s book reports allegations about Amazon’s use of seller data and competitive behavior. Amazon said it does not condone misuse of confidential information and has policies and investigations to protect it. GeekWire quoted the company: “We do not condone the misuse of proprietary confidential information, and thoroughly investigate any reports of employees doing so and take action, which may include termination.”

Amazon also said it draws a line against using non-public, seller-specific data to compete with sellers and disputed allegations that it violated its policies. The interview and book-related coverage do not amount to an independent adjudication of those claims.

What is the dispute over seller fees and prices?

An April 2024 Axios account of Mattioli’s reporting described a book-based estimate that nearly 50% of sellers’ revenue goes to Amazon in fees. That is an attributed estimate, not an uncontested figure for every seller or product category. Axios noted that the FTC’s 2023 lawsuit used a similar number; the figure should not be treated as a finding established by the book or by the coverage cited here.

Amazon offered a different characterization. An Amazon spokesperson told Axios, “Amazon selling fees are 15% or less in most product categories,” and said claims that Amazon’s fees lead to higher prices were not true. That is Amazon’s stated position, not an independent measurement of fees or their effect on consumer prices. The book’s account and Amazon’s response therefore present competing claims rather than a conclusive answer about what shoppers pay because of marketplace fees.
