Cloudflare: lowest total if its DNS setup suits you
At $52.30 for five years in this snapshot, Cloudflare is the least expensive option listed. The trade-off is that the comparison says domains must use Cloudflare nameservers. That may not fit if you need a different DNS provider. Cloudflare describes its policy this way: “Registration, transfer, and renewal prices are always at or below what registries and ICANN charge us.” That is Cloudflare’s own pricing claim, not an independent audit. Porkbun: a small premium for nameserver flexibility
Porkbun’s five-year total is $3.10 above Cloudflare’s in the cited comparison. It is a practical alternative if you want to choose your nameservers, and the comparison lists free privacy for eligible domains. Confirm that privacy is available for the particular extension you want.
Namecheap and GoDaddy: check the renewal math
In the same comparison, both services have higher five-year totals than Cloudflare and Porkbun, largely because their listed renewal costs are higher than their first-year costs. They may still suit buyers who value a provider’s tools, support, or protection features, but those features do not erase the difference in this price snapshot.

Why the first-year price can mislead
A promotional registration price may apply only to the initial term. ICANN advises registrants to review renewal terms because promotions can make the initial registration cheaper than renewal. The amount due to keep a domain is therefore better judged across the period you expect to own it than by the advertised first year alone. ICANN’s guidance on domain renewals and expiration
Namecheap’s displayed .com prices
Namecheap’s pricing table, accessed October 8, 2026, listed a $10.98 promotional registration price, $14.98 regular registration, and $18.48 renewal for .com. It also listed a transfer price of $11.48 during a sale and a regular transfer price of $14.98. The promotional and sale prices are time-sensitive. Namecheap says WHOIS privacy is free for life for .com; its table notes that the $0.20 annual ICANN fee is added to some domain prices at checkout. Namecheap domain pricing

Account for fees and privacy before comparing
ICANN’s FY2026 registrar fee schedule sets a transaction-based fee of $0.20 per annual increment for a qualifying domain add, renewal, or transfer transaction that survives the related grace period. Registrars may present this fee differently: Porkbun’s comparison says it adds the fee to competitor prices for a like-for-like comparison because Namecheap and GoDaddy quote list prices without it, while Porkbun and Cloudflare include it. Compare the checkout total, not just the headline figure. ICANN’s FY2026 registrar fee announcement
Privacy is also not identical across extensions or providers. WHOIS redaction or privacy services can limit the public display of registration contact details, but eligibility and what remains visible vary. Porkbun’s comparison says Cloudflare redaction still shows state and country, while privacy is free for eligible domains at Porkbun and GoDaddy. Check the exact extension and privacy terms on the registrar’s current page.

How to choose a low-cost registrar
- Search the exact domain and extension. Availability and extension-specific pricing affect the final choice.
- Write down the regular renewal price. Separate a limited promotion from the recurring price you will pay to keep the name.
- Compare a realistic ownership period. Add the initial registration and expected renewals, and normalize any fees that are excluded from displayed prices.
- Check privacy eligibility. Verify whether privacy applies to that extension and whether it is included in the quoted total.
- Confirm DNS and nameserver requirements. In particular, decide whether Cloudflare’s nameserver requirement works for your setup.
- Read renewal, expiration, transfer, and recovery terms. Check what happens if payment fails or you let the domain expire.
Keep the domain from expiring
ICANN says registrations typically cover one to ten years, and registrars must send renewal reminders about one month and one week before expiration. Keep account contact details current, record the expiration date, and check that auto-renew is enabled if you want it and that the payment method is valid. If a domain expires, it may eventually be released to someone else; recovery options and fees vary by registrar. ICANN’s registrant renewal and expiration FAQs
