Before buying or selling, verify the marketplace’s official site and support channel, check the item and collection independently, understand the full transaction costs, and treat unfamiliar wallet prompts or requests for extra money as warning signs. This checklist is based on official marketplace and wallet-provider guidance reviewed October 7, 2026; it is practical risk reduction, not a guarantee that a site, listing, wallet, or transaction is safe.
How to compare NFT marketplaces
Compare observable protections and transaction requirements rather than relying on a “safe” label or a universal ranking. Marketplace policies differ, and a badge or remedy on one service does not necessarily apply elsewhere.
- Official access and support: Can you confirm the exact domain and find a support or reporting route on the marketplace’s own site?
- Wallet and chain compatibility: Does the service support your wallet and the network used by the NFT?
- Total cost: Check the amount shown before signing, including marketplace charges, creator earnings or royalties, network gas, and payment-provider fees where applicable.
- Warnings and reporting: Find out how the platform labels suspicious listings and handles reports or disputes.
- Terms and recourse: Read the terms for the platform and the NFT. Understand what the service does not control and which costs may be non-refundable.
For example, OpenSea describes itself as a peer-to-peer platform, says users are responsible for checking NFT legitimacy and applicable NFT terms, and warns that blockchain fees are the user’s responsibility and are final and non-refundable. Those are OpenSea disclosures, not a description of every marketplace. Its terms state, “NFTs and cryptocurrencies are high risk.” OpenSea Terms of Service.
Before you choose a marketplace
Go to the verified site directly
Use a saved bookmark or navigate to the marketplace’s verified official domain. Do not start from an advertisement, unsolicited email, or direct message. Check the spelling and domain carefully: lookalike sites can imitate marketplace pages and prompt you to connect a wallet or sign a transaction. Domain routing can change, so confirm current official domains through the marketplace’s own guidance. Magic Eden’s phishing guide explains how to check its official sources and domains: Magic Eden’s phishing guidance.

Save the support route before a problem occurs
Find the marketplace’s Help Center or official reporting process through its verified site. Do not trust someone who contacts you through an unofficial social channel and claims to be support. OpenSea recommends using its Help Center and warns about fake support requests: OpenSea’s account and NFT safety guidance.
Before you buy an NFT
Verify the seller, collection, and exact item
Research the seller, collection, item identity, and transaction history. When possible, confirm the collection and creator through a source independent of the listing. Compare the contract address and token details with the creator’s verified source or a reliable chain explorer; a collection name or copied artwork alone does not establish authenticity. OpenSea’s terms put responsibility for checking legitimacy, authenticity, and legality on users, while its safety advice recommends buyer diligence: OpenSea’s safety guidance and OpenSea Terms of Service.

Review history and warnings, but do not treat either as proof
Look at the item’s transaction history and marketplace warnings before proceeding. A warning may restrict trading on that specific service, but it is not a universal freeze on the blockchain. OpenSea says a reported stolen item may be disabled on OpenSea for up to 90 days, subject to earlier withdrawal of the report or longer periods in some circumstances; its policy does not mean the item is disabled everywhere. An item with no warning is not thereby proven authentic. See OpenSea’s suspicious-activity policy.
Pause before signing
Be wary of urgency, unexpected giveaways, unusually attractive offers, and links sent by strangers that ask you to connect a wallet. A wallet connection and a token approval are different actions. An approval can authorize a decentralized application to move tokens; read the wallet’s prompt and transaction details, and do not sign anything you do not understand. MetaMask explains that revoking an approval is an on-chain transaction and may require gas: MetaMask’s token approval and revocation guide. Magic Eden also describes fake sites and deceptive signing requests in its phishing guide.

Before and after you sell
Do not pay to “unlock” a sale
A stranger’s request for a buyer-error fee, digitizing fee, validation payment, ETH deposit, or intermediary is a scam signal. OpenSea says a buyer can purchase an item after it is listed without the seller paying an extra fee to facilitate the sale. Do not send cryptocurrency, scan a QR code, contact a supposed deal agent, or sign a transaction to receive proceeds. If a genuine platform error appears, use support reached from the verified marketplace site. See OpenSea’s phishing reporting guidance, OpenSea’s safety guidance, and OpenSea’s examples of common Web3 scams.
Handle messages and account security carefully
Do not open unsolicited files or scan QR codes from alleged marketplace support. Check the sender’s complete email address and domain rather than relying on the display name. OpenSea says authentic messages come from its opensea.io domain and will not ask for a seed phrase or password. Never share a secret recovery phrase or private keys. Get wallet apps through the provider, avoid unknown links and downloads, use unique passwords and two-factor authentication, and consider a hardware security key such as a YubiKey for account two-factor authentication. A security key does not make a malicious transaction prompt safe. OpenSea also recommends considering a crypto hardware wallet; neither device type is a substitute for verifying what you sign. See OpenSea’s safety guidance and its Web3 scam examples.

Marketplace safety checklist
- Open the marketplace through its verified domain or a saved bookmark, not an unsolicited link or advertisement.
- Locate its official support and reporting route on the site.
- Confirm wallet and network compatibility, then inspect all charges and the transaction details before signing.
- Verify the seller, collection, contract address, token details, and item history using reliable sources beyond the listing where possible.
- Read marketplace warnings and terms, remembering that a platform warning or lack of one is not a universal authenticity verdict.
- Reject requests for recovery phrases, private keys, extra sale fees, QR scans, or unexplained signatures.
- Review wallet approvals periodically and revoke only permissions you no longer need, accounting for possible gas costs.
