You can add physical cash to a U.S. PayPal Balance account at participating retail stores. Use a barcode from the PayPal app or, if you have one, swipe your PayPal Debit Card at the register. PayPal says cash loading is available at more than 90,000 U.S. locations, but participation varies by store; check the app before making a trip. A bank account is not required for an in-store reload.
Which stores let you add cash to PayPal?
PayPal lists participating locations at retailers including Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Kroger, Meijer, Circle K, H-E-B, Office Depot, Sheetz, Speedway, and others. Its broader list also includes Casey’s, Dillons, Duane Reade, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, GameStop, GetGo, Giant Eagle, Harvey’s, King Soopers, Kwik Trip/Kwik Star, Love’s Travel Stops, Pick ’n Save, Pilot Flying J, QFC, Ralphs, Royal Farms, Ruler, Rutter’s, Smith’s, Tops, TravelCenters of America, Weis, Winn-Dixie, and Save Mart.

These are examples, not a promise that every branch accepts PayPal reloads. Use the PayPal app’s store-selection screen to confirm a participating location and select the retailer before going to the register. Store money-service hours can also differ from normal store hours. See PayPal’s Add Cash at Stores instructions for its retailer list.
How to add cash with a barcode in the PayPal app
- Open the PayPal app and tap your PayPal balance on the Home or Accounts tab.
- Tap Add Cash at Stores and select the participating retailer you are visiting.
- Wait until you are at the store to generate the barcode. It expires after one hour, and only one barcode can be active at a time.
- Show the barcode to the cashier and hand over the cash amount you want to load. Ask the cashier to confirm the reload fee before completing the transaction.
- Keep the receipt, then check your balance and PayPal confirmation email after the transaction.

How to add cash with a PayPal Debit Card
At a participating store, tell the cashier you want to add cash to PayPal, swipe your PayPal Debit Card (or hand it over for the cashier to swipe), and provide the cash. This method does not require an app barcode. Keep the receipt and check your balance when the reload is complete. PayPal advertises its Debit Card with no monthly fee, no minimum balance, and no credit check; eligibility and product terms still apply. See PayPal’s Debit Card details.
What does a PayPal cash reload cost, and how much can you add?
PayPal’s cash reload fee is up to $3.95 per transaction, and the amount varies by store. Its U.S. Balance Terms list a fee range of $3.74–$3.95. Check the fee with the cashier before paying and review the receipt. At the maximum fee, a $20 reload costs nearly 20% of the cash deposited, so the flat charge weighs more heavily on small deposits.

PayPal’s current personal cash-loading help page lists these limits. A particular store may set lower limits.

How long does the money take to appear?
PayPal says funds are generally added within minutes; its detailed help article specifies within 15 minutes. Do not treat that as a guarantee of instant access. Keep the receipt and wait for the balance update or confirmation before relying on the money for a time-sensitive payment.
What account and documents do you need?
The funds go into a PayPal Balance account, not directly toward a particular online purchase. PayPal’s current U.S. terms use “PayPal Balance account” for accounts formerly called PayPal Cash or PayPal Cash Plus. A PayPal login alone does not guarantee access to cash loading: account eligibility, verification, account status, and location can affect whether the option appears. PayPal may require a confirmed email address and identity verification.

- A U.S. PayPal Balance account with the Add Cash feature available, or a PayPal Debit Card for the card route.
- Physical cash for the amount you want to deposit and the applicable reload fee.
- Your phone, with the app available and enough battery and connectivity to display a barcode, if using the app method.
- A confirmed email address and any identity-verification steps PayPal requests.
You do not need a bank account for the in-store cash method. PayPal also supports adding funds through a confirmed bank account, eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card, Direct Deposit, money received from another PayPal user, and Cash a Check where available. It can suit someone who has cash but no convenient bank account or eligible debit card and wants funds in PayPal without waiting for a bank transfer. The trade-off is a per-reload fee and a trip to a participating store. If you are loading a small amount, compare the fee with other ways to fund your account.

What to do if Add Cash is missing or a reload fails
The Add Cash option is missing
- Confirm your email address and complete any identity-verification request in the app.
- Check PayPal notifications or the Resolution Center for an account limitation.
- Make sure you are using a U.S. account and look from the balance page; app labels can vary by version or account.
- Check whether you have reached a dollar or transaction limit, or whether an earlier barcode is still active.
- Close and reopen the app, then check again. If the feature remains unavailable, contact PayPal through in-app Help or Contact Us.
The store refuses the reload or the barcode will not scan
The branch may not participate, its money-services counter may be closed, the cashier may not recognize the transaction, or the code may be expired or tied to a different retailer. Confirm the location and retailer in the app, check the barcode’s expiration, and use or resolve an active code before generating another. If the store cannot process it, try another location listed in the app.
The balance does not update
Allow the stated posting window, check for a confirmation email, and verify that the transaction was completed rather than canceled. Keep the receipt. If it shows a completed reload but your balance remains unchanged, contact PayPal support through the app and provide the transaction details.
