A live video call can show a person responding in real time without proving that the face belongs to the person behind the account. A two-phone face-swap method was publicly documented in April 2024, but it is one reported tactic—not proof that this is the newest or most common romance scam. The practical safeguard is to verify someone independently and never send money to an online romantic contact.
How the two-phone face-swap method works
In a method described by WIRED on April 18, 2024, one phone is used for the video call while a second phone displays a live, face-swapped image. The calling phone’s rear camera records that altered display and sends it to the person on the other end. Stands and ring lights can help keep the devices aligned and the image well lit. The result may be a live manipulated feed: the displayed face can follow the scammer’s expressions and mouth movements, rather than being a still photograph.
WIRED also described a laptop-based approach using a webcam and real-time face-changing software. The report documented videos and methods, but could not establish how often the tactic has been used. It is more accurate to call this an early reported example of live deepfake romance fraud than the “latest” or dominant tactic.
WIRED used the term “Yahoo Boys” for a loose network or label associated with online con artists, not a formal, centrally commanded organization. The label is not a description of Nigerians generally, and nationality is not a reliable way to judge whether someone is a scammer.

Why scammers want to appear on video
A call can make a fake identity feel more credible. It may answer a reasonable concern that a profile uses stolen photos, create a sense of emotional presence, and deepen a relationship built over weeks or months of messages. But video proves only that a video interaction took place; it does not establish the caller’s identity, location, biography, or intentions.
The face swap is only one possible tool in a broader social-engineering scheme. Reporting in 2025 described the wider evolution of AI-enabled scams, and testimony submitted to the SEC discussed face-swapping and other generative-AI tools in the online-romance-fraud supply chain. Neither establishes that every scammer uses these tools or how prevalent live face swaps are. How a romance scam develops
- A person starts contact through a fake dating profile or an unsolicited message on social media.
- They try to move the conversation away from the original platform, then use frequent messages, compliments, and personal disclosures to build intimacy.
- They avoid meeting in person or repeatedly postpone a promised meeting, sometimes citing work, military service, travel, or living abroad.
- After trust has formed, a crisis or opportunity appears: an emergency, travel problem, medical bill, debt, or investment.
- They ask for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, banking or account access, identity documents, or intimate images. Further demands may be framed as taxes, withdrawal fees, travel costs, or a way to recover earlier losses.
The FTC’s February 2025 consumer alert warns that a romantic contact asking for money is a decisive warning sign, whether or not the person appears genuine on video.
Red flags that matter more than video glitches
Behavior and independently checkable facts are more useful than trying to diagnose a deepfake from a screen. Treat these signs seriously:

- They ask for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, an investment, a loan, or access to an account.
- They press for secrecy, discourage you from talking with friends or family, or say you must prove your love financially.
- They create urgency, insist on a payment method that is difficult to reverse, or promise repayment as a reason to send funds.
- They repeatedly cannot meet in person despite promises, or their job, location, or circumstances always explain why a meeting is impossible.
- Basic details of their story change, or their identity and claims cannot be confirmed independently.
- They ask for passport or driver’s-license copies, tax forms, bank statements, passwords, verification codes, or intimate images.
- They make excuses when asked to complete a simple, harmless, unexpected identity check.
Possible visual or audio oddities—such as unstable facial edges, mismatched mouth movement, unnatural lighting, or inconsistent reflections—can be clues, but they are not proof. Poor bandwidth, low light, compression, and camera autofocus can cause similar effects; a convincing manipulation may show few obvious defects. A normal-looking call is not proof of authenticity, and an awkward-looking call is not proof of fraud.
How to verify someone more safely
No single consumer test can reliably certify that a live face is genuine. Use independent checks and make financial boundaries non-negotiable:

- Search their images with a reputable reverse-image-search service and look for distinctive phrases from their messages. A match can reveal reuse, but no match does not verify an identity.
- Check their name, job, location, and claimed affiliations through sources that are independent of profiles or links they control.
- If you choose to video-chat, ask for an unexpected, harmless action. Treat the response as one signal only, not an identity test that proves authenticity.
- Verify through a contact channel you found independently, rather than relying only on a number, link, or account they supplied.
- Ask a trusted friend or relative to review the relationship and claims. If meeting is appropriate, arrange it in a public place and let someone you trust know your plans.
- Do not send money while the person’s identity or circumstances remain unverified. The FTC’s guidance on romance scams also emphasizes caution around requests for money from someone met online.
Photos with friends, a consistent voice, details learned in conversation, a social-media history, one successful video call, a small gift, or a promise to repay do not independently establish who someone is. Public images can be stolen or reused to construct a false identity.

Act quickly on payments and preserve evidence
- Stop sending money and do not provide more personal information. If a conversation involves threats, harassment, or sextortion, avoid confronting the person if that could escalate the danger or lead to evidence being deleted.
- Save messages, usernames, profile URLs, phone numbers, payment instructions, wallet addresses, email details, and screenshots. Keep receipts and transaction records.
- Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or cryptocurrency exchange immediately. Ask whether the payment can be stopped, frozen, disputed, or reversed. For a gift card, contact its issuer with the card details and receipt; for a wire, contact both the wire company and your bank. For cryptocurrency, share the transaction details with the exchange or wallet provider and law enforcement. Recovery is difficult and cannot be guaranteed, but quick action may give providers a chance to intervene.
- Report the profile to the dating or social platform.
Secure accounts and report the fraud
- Change passwords, starting with email, banking, and payment accounts. Use unique passwords and turn on multifactor authentication.
- Review account-recovery details, email forwarding rules, logged-in devices, and recent account activity and transactions.
- If you shared identity documents, contact the relevant issuing agencies and financial institutions about protective steps such as replacing documents, placing fraud alerts, or freezing credit where available.
- In the United States, report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Contact local police about threats, extortion, stalking, identity theft, or immediate danger.
How to help a friend or relative
Approach the person with concern rather than blame. Shame can make someone hide the relationship or send money without telling anyone. Ask calm, specific questions such as whether they have met in person, whether the person has asked for money, and whether their identity can be checked independently. Offer to review the messages together or help contact the bank. If they are considering another payment, suggest pausing long enough to consult someone they trust; do not ridicule them or describe them as foolish.
