He left Sunderland for Birmingham City on a permanent deal on 2 February 2026, after a 2025–26 loan. The last Sunderland salary estimate that includes him is for 2024–25: £12,500 a week (£650,000 a year). That figure is shared with Jobe Bellingham, and on the reported list it places both men in a sixth-place tie, behind five higher listed salaries.
What changed: from Sunderland player to Birmingham City player
- 2025–26: Sunderland announced that Roberts had joined Birmingham City on loan. The club said his opportunities at Sunderland were limited and that a move would let him play regularly.
- 2 February 2026: BBC Sport reported that Roberts had moved to Birmingham City permanently and had signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.
Any ranking of Sunderland’s top earners therefore has to be framed as a historical comparison. Roberts is no longer on the Sunderland wage list, so the question is where his last reported Sunderland salary sat among the club’s players in the season he was still there.
The last Sunderland salary ranking that includes him (2024–25)
The 2024–25 Sunderland salary estimate, published by Sunderland AFC News, is the most recent Sunderland list that places Roberts. All figures below are estimates from that report, not disclosed contract values.
| Position | Player | Reported weekly wage | Reported annual wage | Note in the report |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Enzo Le Fée | £67,500 | Not stated | Figure relates to a loan deal |
| 2 | Chris Mepham | £35,000 | Not stated | Report discusses possible parent-club wage coverage |
| 3 | Dan Ballard | £25,000 | Not stated | No note in the report |
| 4 | Alan Browne | £15,000 | Not stated | No note in the report |
| 5 | Salis Abdul Samed | £15,000 | Not stated | Figure relates to a loan deal |
| 6 (tie) | Patrick Roberts | £12,500 | £650,000 | Tied with Jobe Bellingham at the same figure |
| 6 (tie) | Jobe Bellingham | £12,500 | Not stated | Tied with Patrick Roberts at the same figure |
Describe Roberts as tied for sixth on these figures, not as a sole sixth-place earner. Two of the higher entries are loan-related, so they should not be read as the full wage Sunderland paid those players. The report’s notes on the Mepham figure point the same way: part of a wage can sit with a parent club rather than with Sunderland.

His earlier position: the 2023–24 ranking
A separate Sunderland AFC News ranking for 2023–24 also listed Roberts at £12,500 a week, and placed him fourth on that list. That season had a different squad and different earners, so the fourth-place finish should not be treated as a movement from sixth in 2024–25. It is context for how the same wage figure looked against a different group of players.
Conflicting figures for his Birmingham City wage
SalaryLeaks, a salary estimate site, has published two figures for Roberts at Birmingham City, and they do not agree with each other.

Neither figure should be presented as Roberts’s verified current wage. Birmingham City has not published an official salary figure for him in the sources reviewed, and Sunderland has not published one for his time at the club either.
How to read wage estimates like these
Salary rankings are useful for spotting broad pay levels, but they are easy to misread. Check the following before quoting a figure.

- Season or date. A 2024–25 list says nothing about a 2026 contract, and a player’s rank can change within a single season as squads change.
- Weekly versus annual. Annual figures are usually weekly wages multiplied by 52. The Roberts 2024–25 figures match that calculation (£12,500 × 52 = £650,000), but many entries in the same kind of list give only one of the two.
- Gross versus take-home. A listed wage is normally a gross figure, before income tax and National Insurance. The list does not say how each estimate was calculated, so a take-home figure cannot be worked out from it.
- Base pay versus bonuses. Estimates may or may not include appearance, goal or performance bonuses. Where the report does not say, treat the figure as an estimate of total pay that may be incomplete.
- Loan versus permanent deals. A loan fee or wage split can mean the club listed does not pay the whole amount.
- Estimate versus disclosure. Club accounts and player contracts are the strongest evidence. Media and website salary tables are estimates, even when they are detailed.
What his Sunderland record shows
Sunderland’s announcement credited Roberts with 147 appearances, nine goals and 18 assists in all competitions. Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Patrick was a catalyst in the success of Sunderland over the past four years.”
The pay position and the playing record are separate measures. A player can rank high on a salary list while contributing modest output, and a lower-paid player can have a bigger role in a club’s results. The estimates above show pay only.
