List National Honor Society (NHS) membership in the Common App’s academic honors or Achievements area. Use Activities—or, for the 2026–2027 application season, Activities and Experiences—only to describe work you actually did, such as serving as an officer or completing sustained service. Membership alone is not an activity description.
Where NHS membership belongs
Report NHS membership as an academic honor or achievement. Common App’s first-year application guide separates academic honors and achievements from activities. In the honors entry, use “National Honor Society” or the accurate membership or award wording used by your school.
Common App’s preparation resource says students can enter up to five academic honors received during high school. It asks applicants to gather each honor’s title, when it was received, and its recognition level, such as regional or national. Enter only a level supported by the recognition you actually received; do not label ordinary school membership as regional or national recognition unless that is accurate. See Gather your materials.
When to include NHS in Activities or Experiences
Add a separate entry only when it communicates meaningful participation beyond the fact of membership. Examples include officer responsibilities, organizing a project, or sustained service you personally completed. Describe the role and work truthfully; do not imply that every NHS member performed service or held leadership responsibilities.

Common App’s activity guidance provides fields for an activity type, position or leadership, organization name, and a concise description of involvement. Its 2025 guidance gives limits of 50 characters for position or leadership, 100 for organization name, and 150 for activity details, honors won, and accomplishments. Hours per week and weeks per year are entered elsewhere in the section. Check the live application for the current field labels and limits. See Activities.
How to decide whether to list it twice
| What you are reporting | Where it belongs | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| NHS membership or selection as a recognition | Academic honors or Achievements | Accurate honor title, year received, and recognition level supported by the facts |
| Actual NHS leadership, projects, or sustained service | Activities or Experiences | Your role, organization, concise description, and time commitment as requested by the form |
Using both areas can make sense if each entry says something distinct: the honors entry records the recognition, while the activity entry explains what you did. If an activity entry would only repeat “NHS member,” it adds no useful detail.

Account for the application season
For the 2026–2027 season, Common App announced that the Activities section will be renamed “Activities and Experiences.” The label is season-dependent; the distinction remains the same: honors record recognition, while the activity section describes involvement. Follow the wording in your live application and any college-specific instructions.
