The announcement describes a regional total—not a single deposit—and does not verify the headline claim that the copper is worth more than $100 billion.
Where was the copper reported?
The reported resources are on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in China. In an announcement dated January 6, 2025, the China Geological Survey, under the Ministry of Natural Resources, said exploration over the preceding four years had identified more than 20 million tonnes of copper resources. Xinhua’s report on the State Council portal names four resource bases: Yulong, Duolong, Julong-Jiama, and Xiongcun-Zhunuo.
So the figure is not one newly announced 20-million-tonne mine or deposit. It is a reported addition spread across several resource bases on the plateau.
What does the 150-million-tonne figure mean?
The same announcement estimates the plateau’s copper-resource potential at 150 million tonnes. That is a regional estimate of potential, not a claim that 150 million tonnes have been discovered, proven as reserves, or shown to be economically recoverable. The more-than-20-million-tonne figure is reported newly discovered resources; the 150-million-tonne figure describes estimated potential.

Neither figure, by itself, says how much copper can ultimately be mined or produced. The official announcement does not provide a technical recoverability study, production schedule, or project economics.
Is the copper really worth more than $100 billion?
The official announcement does not state a $100 billion valuation or explain how one could be calculated. The April 2025 article that popularized the dollar figure does not disclose a valuation method in its retrieved text, so the amount should be treated as an unsubstantiated headline estimate, not a verified appraisal. The article containing the claim is evidence of the headline wording, not proof of the valuation.

A resource tonnage is not the same as saleable copper. A defensible valuation would need assumptions about grade, recoverable share, processing and infrastructure costs, permitting, timing, copper prices, and other project risks. The announcement supplies no such calculation, so it cannot establish that the reported resources are worth a particular dollar amount.
Why does China consider the discovery important?
The official rationale centers on copper supply-chain security. Xinhua reported that Tang Juxing, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said plateau copper development would help secure China’s copper industrial and supply chains. The report also noted that an electric vehicle uses four times as much copper as a gasoline-powered car; it did not provide a separate methodology for that comparison. The January 7, 2025 report gives this context, but it does not establish that the newly reported resources are already supplying industry.

What could limit development?
The plateau’s fragile environment is a stated constraint, not a footnote to the resource estimate. The official report says development must coordinate resource utilization with ecological preservation. Dorje, also identified as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, called for near-zero emissions, no pollution, minimal ecological disturbance, green-mining principles, and restoration and revegetation after extraction.
Those safeguards matter to any future economic assessment: a large geological resource does not establish that mining can proceed, on what schedule, or at what cost. The announcement describes exploration findings and potential; it does not report production status or demonstrate project-level viability.
