His career included a major broadcasting and publishing business, but the scale of those ventures does not reveal his personal assets, debts, ownership stakes or estate value.
Why there is no reliable net-worth figure
A defensible personal net-worth estimate requires evidence about assets and liabilities, or a credible valuation that explains what it counts. The sources available here do not provide an estate accounting, personal financial statement or an attributable calculation of Stirling’s wealth. Without that evidence, a specific dollar amount—or a low-to-high range—would be speculation.

Business holdings cannot simply be treated as personal wealth: company value, ownership shares, debt and personal liabilities are different things. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2009 honours notice identified Stirling Communications International as the parent company of NTV, OZ FM and The Newfoundland Herald, but did not value Stirling’s personal estate (Government of Newfoundland and Labrador).
What is known about Stirling’s business career
Publishing began with The Sunday Herald
Stirling founded The Sunday Herald in 1946. The Newfoundland Herald’s corporate history says he was 24 and had saved $1,000 to finance the first issues. That figure describes his reported start-up funding, not his later wealth (The Newfoundland Herald).

He expanded into radio and television
The History of Canadian Broadcasting records that Stirling launched CJON radio in 1951 and CJON-TV in 1955, followed by other ventures in Montreal, Ottawa, Windsor and Arizona. It also notes his work across television stations in Newfoundland and the OZ FM network (The History of Canadian Broadcasting).
NTV reports ownership of as many as 23 stations
NTV’s corporate history says Stirling built radio and television stations in Canada and the United States, at one point owning as many as 23. It says he later sold outside holdings and focused on Newfoundland and Labrador (NTV). This describes the reach of his business career; it is not a valuation of his personal net worth.
