There is no verified, like-for-like ranking showing where Derby County owner David Clowes sits among EFL Championship owners. A secondary source attributes a £350 million estimate and 345th place on the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List to “David Clowes and family,” but that claim has not been confirmed against the original entry—and a general rich-list position is not a Championship-owner ranking.
What is known about David Clowes’s reported wealth?
The specific figure found in public coverage is £350 million, reportedly placing “David Clowes and family” 345th on the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List. The original Rich List entry has not been verified, so this should be treated as an attributed secondary-source claim, not a confirmed valuation of Clowes’s personal net worth. The secondary source making the claim does not establish his position relative to other Championship owners.
A rich-list position covers a broader population and may refer to a family rather than one individual. It cannot be converted into a league ranking without comparable estimates for the owners of the clubs in a defined Championship season.
What is Clowes’s connection to Derby County?
Derby County’s official ownership page says the club is owned by Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd and lists David Clowes among the club’s directors. The page says the men’s first team retained Championship status for the 2025/26 campaign; that is the competition-status statement available there, not confirmation of the club’s status in a later season.

The corporate records describe different levels of the ownership structure. Companies House records Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited as the active person with significant control of Derby County (The Rams) Limited from 12 May 2025, with 75% or more of shares and voting rights and the right to appoint or remove directors. Clowes Developments’ direct person-with-significant-control record ceased on that date. The Companies House record documents a change in the recorded control chain; it does not, on its own, establish that Clowes stopped being associated with the club.
Separately, Derby County’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 identify Clowes Developments as the ultimate parent undertaking through its 100% ownership of the immediate parent. These statements concern distinct legal entities and reporting dates, so they should not be collapsed into a claim that Clowes personally owns the club directly. The club’s filing history provides the accounts context.

What do the latest published financial figures show?
Clowes Developments group accounts
Clowes Developments’ audited group accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025 report £318.8 million in net assets and £39.5 million in net debt. They also report £147.1 million in turnover and £5.4 million in operating profit before exceptional items. These are consolidated figures for a property development group with football-related activities—not David Clowes’s personal balance sheet, a measure of liquid cash, or money necessarily available to put into Derby County. The company’s accounts filings cover that reporting period.
Derby County’s accounts
For the year ended June 2025, Derby County reported £31.9 million in revenue, an £11.3 million loss and £44.9 million in net liabilities. The club said the net liabilities largely related to owner-funded cash injections for day-to-day operations. It also reported £25.3 million of Profit and Sustainability headroom over the three-year period. That regulatory and club-finance figure is not an estimate of the owner’s wealth. The club’s financial summary provides the figures and context.

Company net assets, club liabilities and owner support answer different questions. Net assets are calculated within a company’s accounts; net debt reflects its borrowing position under the accounts’ definitions; club liabilities describe the club’s financial position. None, alone, establishes an individual’s net worth. A personal wealth estimate would also need to account for ownership interests, personal and business liabilities, asset valuations and other claims on those assets.

The available figures do not provide a current, comparable wealth dataset for all Championship owners. A defensible ranking would first need to set a season and date, then use estimates calculated on a consistent basis for the individual or family being compared. It would also need to distinguish personal net worth from company assets and liquid resources, account for each owner’s stake and control structure, and identify the source and date of every estimate.

- Choose the comparison set: Championship membership and ownership can change, so define which season’s clubs and owners are included.
- Compare like with like: Do not put a company group’s net assets beside an individual owner’s estimated net worth as though they were the same measure.
- Show the evidence and uncertainty: State who or what is being valued, the estimate’s source and date, the ownership share involved, and where a figure is unavailable or uncertain.
A BBC Sport report said Clowes was seeking fresh investment for Derby and that the search had been under way for a year at the time of publication. That dated report does not establish whether a search remains active now, nor does it quantify his personal wealth. BBC Sport’s report is evidence of what was reported at that time, not a current wealth assessment.
