The brand’s main production footprint spans Sweden, Belgium, China and the United States, with additional local assembly in some markets. The factory used depends on the model, destination market and model year.
Volvo Cars is also separate from Volvo Group, the company best known for trucks, buses and construction equipment. The passenger-car business is majority-owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, commonly called Geely.
Where are Volvo cars made?
Volvo Cars operates manufacturing plants in Europe, Asia and North America. The principal facilities are:
| Location | Country | Examples of Volvo production |
|---|---|---|
| Torslanda, Gothenburg | Sweden | Large Volvo models and electric-vehicle production, depending on production allocation |
| Ghent | Belgium | XC40, EX40 and related compact models; production changes by model year |
| Ridgeville, South Carolina | United States | S60 production historically, plus the EX90 and other models as production is expanded or reallocated |
| Chengdu | China | Selected Volvo sedans and SUVs for Chinese and export markets |
| Daqing | China | Selected larger Volvo models, including production associated with the S90 line |
| Taizhou | China | Selected Volvo models, including compact and electrified vehicles at various points in the production cycle |
Volvo also has local or contract assembly arrangements in certain markets, including Malaysia and India. These operations may use completely knocked-down kits or market-specific assembly rather than producing every component locally.

What is made in Sweden?
Sweden remains central to Volvo’s engineering, design and manufacturing operations. Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Gothenburg is the company’s historic main facility and produces larger vehicles and newer platforms according to the company’s production plans.
Sweden is also home to Volvo Cars’ headquarters and major research and development operations. That does not mean every Volvo sold in Sweden—or every Volvo sold elsewhere—is Swedish-built. A Swedish-designed vehicle can be assembled in Belgium, China or the United States.
Which Volvos are made in the United States?
Volvo Cars’ Ridgeville plant is near Charleston, South Carolina. It was established to serve the North American market and has produced the S60 sedan. The site has also become an important part of Volvo’s electric-vehicle manufacturing plans, including production of the EX90 electric SUV as the plant ramps up.

Exact output can change as Volvo adjusts capacity, introduces new platforms or moves production between factories. Therefore, “made in America” should be confirmed for the specific vehicle rather than assumed from its model name or dealer location.

Are all Volvo cars made in Sweden?
No. Sweden is Volvo’s historic home, but it is only one part of the company’s manufacturing network. A Volvo purchased in the United States could have been assembled in South Carolina, Belgium, Sweden or China, depending on the model and production date.
The same model can also come from different factories for different markets. Production may be split by region to reduce shipping costs, meet local-content rules, use available factory capacity or support tariff and trade requirements.

How to check where a particular Volvo was built
- Find the VIN. It is usually visible through the windshield, on the driver-side door-jamb label or in the vehicle documents.
- Check the vehicle label and paperwork. The certification label normally identifies the final assembly country and may show a manufacturing date.
- Ask the dealer for the build sheet. A Volvo retailer can often identify the plant and production specifications from the VIN.
- Read the window sticker. For a newer vehicle in the United States, the Monroney label includes country-of-origin information for final assembly and certain major components.
- Do not rely on the badge alone. “Volvo” identifies the brand, not the country where that particular car was assembled.
Who owns Volvo Cars?
Volvo Cars is majority-owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a Chinese automotive group founded and chaired by Li Shufu. Geely acquired Volvo Cars from Ford in 2010. Volvo Cars had previously been part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group, after Ford bought the passenger-car business from Swedish company AB Volvo in 1999.
Geely’s ownership does not make Volvo Cars a division of Geely Automobile Holdings in the simple sense. These are related but distinct corporate entities. Geely Holding is the privately controlled parent group; Geely Automobile Holdings is a separately listed automaker within the wider group; and Volvo Car AB is its own listed company.

Volvo Cars is not the same as Volvo Group
The word “Volvo” causes a common ownership mix-up. There are two important companies:
| Company | Main business | Ownership structure |
|---|---|---|
| Volvo Cars | Passenger cars, SUVs and electric vehicles | Listed in Stockholm; majority-owned by Geely-related entities |
| Volvo Group, formally AB Volvo | Trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial engines | Separate publicly traded company with its own shareholder base |
Volvo Cars and Volvo Group share historical roots and the Volvo brand, but neither company owns the other today. They have a trademark arrangement under which both use the Volvo name and logo in their respective businesses.
Does ownership affect the value of a Volvo?
For a car buyer, the owner’s nationality is less useful than the vehicle’s warranty, service network, parts availability, reliability record and resale demand. Geely ownership does not by itself tell you where a car was built or how it will perform.

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Manufacturing location can still matter financially in three practical ways:
- Trade rules: Tariffs and local-content requirements can affect vehicle pricing, incentives and availability.
- Parts and repairs: A model built in a different region may have different parts logistics, although Volvo’s global service system supports the same model families across markets.
- Tax credits: Electric-vehicle incentives often depend on final assembly, battery sourcing and other rules. The rules change frequently, so check the current government guidance rather than assuming a Volvo qualifies because it is electric.
Common claims that need correcting
- “All Volvos are made in Sweden.” Incorrect. Volvo has major plants in Belgium, China and the United States, alongside Swedish facilities.
- “Geely owns Volvo Group.” Incorrect. Geely owns Volvo Cars; Volvo Group is a separate company.
- “A Chinese-owned Volvo is made in China.” Not necessarily. Ownership and final assembly location are different facts.
- “A U.S.-sold Volvo is made in America.” Not necessarily. Some are assembled in South Carolina, while others come from overseas factories.
- “The model always comes from one factory.” Not reliably. Plants and model assignments can change with market, model year and production strategy.

Use the vehicle identification number, certification label, window sticker or dealer build sheet. These records are more reliable than the model name or the location where the car was sold.
The Bottom Line

Volvo Cars is majority-owned by Geely Holding, while Volvo Group—the truck and industrial-equipment company—is separate.
