If you are researching Rivian as a potential investment—or wondering where its electric trucks come from—the short answer is straightforward: the Rivian R1T is assembled in Normal, Illinois, and Rivian is owned by its public shareholders rather than by one parent company. Volkswagen is its largest currently disclosed shareholder, while Amazon is another major investor; neither owns Rivian outright.
Ownership percentages can change as Rivian issues shares or securities convert, so figures should be read with their filing dates. Rivian’s 2026 proxy statement and Volkswagen’s April 30, 2026 filing are the sources for the ownership figures below.
Where are Rivian trucks made?
Rivian builds its R1T electric pickup truck at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. The same plant assembles the R1S electric SUV and Rivian’s commercial delivery vans, according to Rivian.
The Normal facility was originally built for Mitsubishi Motors. Rivian acquired the former assembly site and expanded it for electric-vehicle production. Rivian says the complex covers approximately 4.3 million square feet, with another 1.1 million square feet being added for R2 production, according to Rivian’s facility information.

That means the answer is not Georgia, California, or overseas production for the R1T. The R1T currently comes from Rivian’s Illinois plant.
Rivian manufacturing locations
| Location | Status | Vehicles or purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Normal, Illinois | Operating | R1T, R1S, commercial vans, and R2 production |
| Stanton Springs, Georgia | Under construction; production projected to begin in 2028 | Planned large-scale R2 production |
Rivian’s Georgia facility is intended to increase production of the R2 platform. It is not currently the factory producing R1T trucks. The company’s California sites are primarily used for engineering, software, electronics, motors, inverters, charging technology, and corporate operations—not final vehicle assembly, according to Rivian.
Who owns Rivian?
Rivian Automotive, Inc. is a publicly traded company. Its Class A shares trade under the ticker RIVN. Public shareholders collectively own the company, so there is no single private owner in the way there would be with a wholly owned subsidiary.
Rivian has two share classes, according to its 2026 proxy statement filed with the SEC:

- Class B shares: ten votes per share.
This distinction is important. The investor with the largest economic stake is not necessarily the investor with proportionally the most voting influence. Ownership can also be diluted or recalculated when the company issues new stock, grants employee equity, or shares are issued under warrants and investment agreements.

Volkswagen is Rivian’s largest disclosed shareholder
Volkswagen is not Rivian’s parent company, but it is the largest currently disclosed strategic shareholder. Volkswagen AG and its wholly owned subsidiary Volkswagen US-Holding reported beneficial ownership of 209,769,645 Rivian Class A shares, or 15.9%, based on an April 30, 2026 filing. That filing included 62,889,522 shares issued to Volkswagen on April 30, 2026, according to Volkswagen’s SEC filing.
For investors, “beneficial ownership” can include shares a holder owns directly as well as shares it has the right to acquire under an agreement or other arrangement. It is therefore important not to compare percentages from different filings without checking their dates.
Volkswagen and Rivian also own a separate technology company, Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC, on a 50–50 basis. This joint venture works on electrical architecture, vehicle software, electronic control units, and related vehicle-network technology. It does not mean Volkswagen owns 50% of Rivian Automotive, as described in Rivian’s 2026 SEC proxy statement.
Amazon is another major Rivian shareholder
Amazon remains one of Rivian’s largest shareholders. Rivian’s 2026 proxy statement reported that Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC beneficially owned 162,086,884 shares, or 12.9%. The Amazon holding company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., and the reported figure included shares issuable under an Amazon warrant, according to the SEC-filed proxy statement.
Amazon has also been an important commercial customer. Rivian has supplied electric delivery vans for Amazon’s delivery network. That commercial relationship and Amazon’s equity stake are separate from the question of who controls Rivian, although both can be relevant when assessing Rivian’s business and investment risks.

Other significant disclosed holders
Rivian’s 2026 proxy statement also identified several other sizable holders. These reported share counts and percentages are from that proxy’s ownership table:
| Holder | Reported shares or beneficial ownership | Approximate percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Global Oryx Company Limited | 113,934,082 shares | 9.0% |
| The Vanguard Group | 68,313,205 shares | 5.4% |
| Volkswagen International America | 146,880,123 shares in the proxy’s ownership table | 11.7% |
The Volkswagen figures illustrate why filing dates matter. The 11.7% figure came from an ownership date of April 23, 2026 in the proxy. Volkswagen’s later April 30 filing reported a 15.9% beneficial stake after additional shares were issued. The later figure is the more current one in the SEC filing.

No. Volkswagen does not own Rivian outright and does not control it as a parent corporation. Its disclosed 15.9% stake makes it Rivian’s largest shareholder, but the remaining shares are held by other investors and the public market.
Volkswagen has committed additional investment to Rivian under agreements containing financial, operational, regulatory, and testing conditions. Rivian’s filings state that Volkswagen’s additional equity investments could total approximately $1.5 billion, in addition to earlier investments. A separate $1 billion term-loan facility was scheduled to be available to the technology joint venture during October 2026, subject to financing conditions, according to Rivian’s 2025 annual filing with the SEC.
Those commitments may strengthen Rivian’s access to capital and technology, but they should not be confused with a completed acquisition. A planned investment, a warrant, a loan facility, and an issued shareholding each have different effects on ownership and risk.

What role does founder RJ Scaringe have?
Robert J. “RJ” Scaringe founded Rivian in June 2009 and remains its CEO and chairman of the board. He owns Rivian stock, but he is not the company’s sole owner.
Rivian’s 2026 proxy reported that Scaringe beneficially owned, as of April 23, 2026:
- 10,798,921 Class A shares.
- All 3,912,500 outstanding Class B shares.
Those holdings represented approximately 1.2% of Rivian’s economic ownership but approximately 3.8% of its combined voting power, according to the SEC-filed proxy statement. The difference exists because each Class B share carries ten votes, while each Class A share carries one.
For shareholders, this is a reminder that economic ownership and voting control are not always the same. A founder can have a relatively small percentage of the company’s financial value while retaining greater influence over shareholder votes.

- Do not treat Volkswagen as a parent company. Volkswagen’s stake is significant, but Rivian remains a separate publicly traded corporation.
- Check the filing date. Share counts and percentages can change after new stock is issued or warrants are exercised.
- Separate customers from owners. Amazon’s delivery-van relationship and investment do not give Amazon full ownership of Rivian.
- Look at voting rights as well as share percentages. Rivian’s Class B shares carry ten votes each, which affects control.
- Distinguish plans from current production. The Georgia plant is a future R2 manufacturing site projected to begin production in 2028; the R1T is currently assembled in Illinois.
