How to Choose an SSD: NVMe vs. SATA, Capacity, and Endurance

Choose an SSD by confirming your computer’s supported form factor and protocol, sizing capacity for your files and growth, and comparing performance, TBW, warranty, and cost.

Choose an SSD in this order: confirm your computer supports the drive’s form factor and interface, select capacity for your current files and expected growth, then compare workload-relevant performance, endurance, warranty, and total cost. NVMe is generally the faster option when your system supports it; SATA remains a sensible replacement for systems that require SATA. An M.2 drive is not necessarily NVMe.

1. Check compatibility before comparing SSDs

Start with the exact computer model’s manual or manufacturer specifications. Confirm the supported drive form factor, interface and protocol, physical length, and any bay or slot requirements. A drive that fits physically may still use the wrong connection type.

M.2 describes a form factor, not a protocol

M.2 SSDs can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe. SATA-IO describes M.2 as supporting different connection types, and Solidigm likewise distinguishes M.2 SATA from M.2 PCIe/NVMe drives. Check the manual for both the protocol the system supports and the M.2 length it accepts; do not assume that an M.2 slot supports NVMe. SATA-IO’s M.2 overview explains the form factor’s connection options.

2. Decide between NVMe and SATA

NVMe is a protocol commonly used over PCIe in consumer SSDs. It is designed for high-speed data transfer using parallel, low-latency paths. SATA is a separate interface and protocol; SATA-IO lists its current transfer rate as 6 Gb/s and says there are no plans to extend bandwidth beyond that rate. SATA-IO’s FAQ provides that rate context.

If your computer supports NVMe and your workload can benefit from it, an NVMe SSD is the performance-oriented choice. If the system is SATA-only, a compatible SATA SSD is the appropriate replacement. The interface alone cannot guarantee that every task will feel faster: applications and system limits matter too.

3. Choose capacity for your files and growth

Estimate the space used by your operating system, applications, games, active projects, and other files. Add room for expected growth, and account for whether you routinely move older material to external or cloud storage. Manufacturer guidance from Solidigm offers these dated examples—not universal minimums—for matching capacity to a workload:

Small business 256 GB or more; 512 GB suggested to leave room for growth
Content creation 1 TB or more; 2 TB may suit projects and backup images
Gaming 1 TB or more as a starting point for the operating system and a range of games
Student work 256 GB or more for smaller-file needs; 1 TB or more may be needed for science or engineering files

These examples come from Solidigm’s 2022 storage guide, which frames them as workload guidance rather than fixed requirements. Your existing library, budget, storage habits, and likely growth should determine the final size. Solidigm’s SSD guide explains its capacity examples and workload distinctions.

4. Compare performance that matches your work

Sequential read and write performance describes transfers involving larger files, such as moving a large video. Random performance relates to smaller files stored in scattered locations, a pattern found in mixed everyday activity. Peak sequential figures alone are not a complete measure of how responsive a drive will feel.

Manufacturers commonly produce specification figures with synthetic workloads, which may not reflect your applications. When comparing specific drives, look for independent tests that resemble your actual work, and avoid paying extra for throughput your computer or workload cannot use. Solidigm discusses these performance categories and their limits in its technical guide.

5. Understand TBW and the warranty

TBW means terabytes written. It is a rating for the amount of data specified to be written over an SSD’s rated life—not a countdown to immediate failure once that figure is reached. Compare the TBW rating with the warranty terms for the exact model and region, since warranties can impose both a time limit and a write limit.

For context, a Solidigm technical guide published approximately in 2023 gives the 1 TB 670p as an example rated at 370 TBW, describing that as well over 200 GB written daily for five years. The same guide gives its 2 TB 670p example as 740 TBW with a five-year limited warranty. Those figures are specific to those products and that guide, not a current model recommendation. Solidigm’s guide provides the examples.

For browsing, school, office work, and gaming, Solidigm says typical consumer applications do not reach SSD endurance thresholds, so capacity, compatibility, cost, and warranty may be more useful priorities than chasing the highest TBW. If you regularly write unusually large volumes—such as recording or editing substantial video projects—compare TBW more closely. As one product-specific example, Crucial describes its warranty as three or five years, or until the maximum TBW is written, whichever comes first. Check the current datasheet and warranty for the particular drive and region. Crucial’s warranty information sets out its terms.
