If your U.S. credit-card payment is due on a Sunday or holiday, the date printed on your statement does not change. But when your card issuer does not accept or receive payments by mail on that date, federal rules generally require it to treat a qualifying mailed payment received by the next business day as on time. That protection does not automatically apply to online, app, or phone payments.
When is a credit-card payment due if the date falls on a Sunday or holiday?
For a mailed payment, the key question is not simply whether the date is a Sunday or holiday. It is whether the issuer accepts or receives payments by mail on the due date. If it does not, the next-business-day rule generally applies: the issuer must treat a payment received by mail by 5 p.m. on the next business day as timely. The 5 p.m. deadline is measured in the time zone where mailed payments should be received, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
Regulation Z defines the relevant next business day as the next day on which the creditor accepts or receives payments by mail. So an issuer’s mail practices—not just the calendar—determine whether the rule applies. A Sunday or holiday may matter because mail is not accepted or delivered, but check your statement or issuer’s instructions rather than assume.
Does the extra time apply to online, app, or phone payments?
No automatic extension applies to electronic or phone payments just because mail is not accepted on the due date. The CFPB says those payments must be made by the date due; use the cutoff and time zone stated by your issuer.

Online payments
Under Regulation Z’s official interpretation, a payment made through the creditor’s website is generally received on the date you authorize it. But if you instruct the issuer to make the payment immediately after 5 p.m.—or after a later cutoff the issuer has set—the payment is deemed received on the next business day. The applicable time zone may be the one specified by the issuer, not your local time. See the CFPB’s Regulation Z payment-crediting rule and its guidance on when a card payment is considered late.
Phone payments
Do not assume a phone payment receives the mailed-payment protection. Make it by the due date and within the issuer’s stated cutoff, and keep the confirmation details.

What is the difference between the due date and the late-payment date?
The statement’s printed date remains the contractual due date. When the issuer does not accept or receive mail that day, the rule affects when a qualifying mailed payment may be treated as late; it does not move the date printed on the bill. The Regulation Z statement-disclosure rule addresses the due date shown on statements.
That distinction matters if you pay electronically: the mailed-payment rule does not grant an extra day for an online, app, or phone payment. For any method, check the issuer’s own instructions for the deadline that applies.

How can you avoid a late payment?
- Pay early when you can. Mail and third-party bill-pay services can take time to process, the CFPB notes. Sending a payment ahead of the deadline reduces the risk that processing or delivery delays will matter.
- Use the issuer’s instructions. Confirm which payment methods it accepts, the applicable cutoff, and the time zone for receipt. The federal rule does not establish the exact policy for an individual issuer or account.
- Keep confirmation. Save the online or phone confirmation, or other records showing when and how you paid.
- Act if a fee appears. Contact the issuer, explain the timing and payment method, and ask whether it will correct the charge or waive the fee. The CFPB recommends contacting the issuer about a late fee.
What if your credit-card statement arrives late?
A statement arriving late does not automatically extend the payment deadline. Federal law requires issuers to establish procedures for mailing statements at least 21 days before the payment due date. If yours arrives unusually late, contact the issuer promptly to explain and ask whether special arrangements are possible, as the CFPB’s late-statement guidance advises.
