The dates describe different things: Boeing’s first-delivery forecast, Lufthansa’s broader fleet schedule and the airline’s expected cabin-service timing.
What is the current delivery date?
Boeing said in its second-quarter 2026 results that it continues to anticipate the first 777X delivery in 2027. Its July 2026 certification update also describes work toward first delivery in 2027. These are Boeing forecasts, not a guaranteed handover date.
Boeing’s May 2026 report on Lufthansa’s first 777-9 likewise said the aircraft was preparing for certification testing and first delivery in 2027. The previously suggested 2026 timing therefore does not match Boeing’s more recent stated expectation.
Why does Lufthansa list 2026 to 2029?
Lufthansa lists 20 Boeing 777-9s in a 2026–2029 delivery period on its fleet page. The range covers the airline’s order deliveries; it does not say that the first aircraft will arrive in 2026. Lufthansa’s 2025 annual-report fleet section also gives the 2026–2029 range.

The dates are not necessarily contradictory: an order schedule spanning several years is different from the manufacturer’s forecast for the first handover. Boeing currently puts that first delivery in 2027.
What has happened to Lufthansa’s first 777-9?
The aircraft made its first flight on May 7, 2026, Boeing reported. It has a passenger cabin outfitted with seats and in-flight entertainment systems. Boeing said it would undergo ground and flight testing, with particular attention to cabin systems and connectivity, before delivery.

That first flight is a meaningful step, but it is not the same as completing certification or delivering the aircraft. Boeing reported that the 777-9 received FAA approval to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization 4B. Its July update described remaining certification milestones and work to complete certification deliverables ahead of the 2027 forecast.
When is Lufthansa expected to fly it with Allegris?
Lufthansa’s Allegris information says it expects the 777-9 to fly with that cabin during 2027. This is the airline’s cabin-operation reference, not a separate confirmation of a specific delivery date.

What Boeing says about the program
Boeing said the 777X test fleet had accumulated more than 4,700 flight-test hours and that more than 620 777X airplanes had been ordered. Both figures are Boeing-reported program figures, not independently verified counts.
After the first flight of Lufthansa’s aircraft, Boeing 777/777X chief pilot Capt. Ted Grady said, “The airplane performed as we expected,” according to Boeing’s May 8, 2026 article. Boeing 777-9 vice president and program manager Terry Beezhold described preparation for certification testing as progress while noting the challenges of bringing a new airplane to market.
