Re:

When Should You Claim Social Security if You Have Retirement Savings?

Retirement savings can help bridge a delay in Social Security, but the right claiming age depends on your benefit estimates, cash needs, taxes, work plans and household rules.

Having retirement savings may let you delay Social Security, but it does not by itself make delaying the right choice. Compare your Social Security estimates at different starting ages with the withdrawals you would need to cover the gap, your work and tax plans, household eligibility, and how you weigh current income against a larger benefit later. Social Security Administration (SSA) delayed retirement credits stop at age 70, so waiting beyond then does not increase your retirement benefit.

How savings change the claiming decision

Retirement savings can provide income while you wait to claim Social Security. That gives you another option: you may be able to cover some or all of your expenses from savings now in exchange for a higher monthly Social Security benefit later. But that choice trades one resource for another. The relevant question is not simply whether you can afford to wait; it is whether the withdrawals required to wait make sense for your household compared with the benefits of claiming sooner.

SSA describes the decision as one that affects your monthly benefit for the rest of your life. Benefits can generally start at age 62 in the ordinary worker case. Starting before your full retirement age (FRA) reduces the monthly amount; delaying retirement benefits increases it through age 70. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. For that group, starting at 62 can mean a reduction of up to 30% compared with the FRA amount. The exact reduction depends on birth cohort and claiming age, so use your own SSA estimates rather than applying that figure to everyone. See SSA’s claiming-age FAQ and retirement benefit adjustments by age.

Delaying past FRA can raise the monthly benefit, but the increase ends at 70. If you are already 70, waiting longer to claim does not add delayed retirement credits. SSA does not prescribe one ideal age for everyone; its retirement planning page and options matrix help compare estimates and circumstances.

Compare claiming ages against the cost of the bridge

A useful comparison puts the cash you would spend while waiting beside the higher monthly benefit you would receive later. First, get your own estimated benefits at several starting ages from your my Social Security account. Then estimate the monthly and annual amount you would need to withdraw if you delayed. Use the same household spending assumptions for every option; otherwise, the comparison will not show what the timing decision itself changes.

For each age you are considering, account for the whole household budget rather than treating Social Security as an isolated payment. Include savings withdrawals, earnings, pensions or other income your household actually has, and essential expenses. Identify which savings accounts would fund the bridge, since account choice can affect taxes. Do not assume a generic example or an average-worker estimate matches your record.

Question to compare What to establish
Benefit at each start age Your SSA estimate at several ages, based on your earnings record
Cost of waiting Monthly and annual withdrawals needed to meet household expenses during the delay
Tax interaction How the withdrawals and other income affect federal tax on benefits for your filing status and tax year
Work plans Whether you will work, whether an earnings test applies, and whether future earnings could improve your record
Household rules Potential spouse, divorced-spouse, or family eligibility and how one person’s timing affects the household plan
Later-life priorities Your health and longevity assumptions, and the value you place on a larger guaranteed monthly benefit later

This comparison is not a personal break-even calculation. A break-even age depends on the benefit estimates and assumptions used, including how long benefits are received, what happens to savings used during the delay, and how taxes affect the cash available. A single universal age would conceal those assumptions and might not fit your household.

A practical way to make the comparison

  1. Record your estimates. Use your my Social Security account and write down the estimated monthly benefit at several possible start ages. SSA’s planning page links to retirement planning tools. Check that your earnings history is accurate before relying on the estimates.
  2. Build a bridge budget. For each possible delay, calculate how much income your household would need from savings each month and across the year. Note which account or accounts would provide it and whether your planned withdrawal can be sustained alongside your other needs.
  3. Check tax effects. Look at the effect of withdrawals and other income on the taxable portion of benefits using the rules for the relevant tax year and your filing status. IRS Publication 915 provides the federal worksheet and guidance for tax year 2025.
  4. Review earnings and eligibility rules. If you expect to work, examine the earnings test for the year you would claim and whether further earnings could change your benefit. Separately check whether you may qualify on a spouse’s or family member’s record.
  5. Coordinate Medicare and revisit the plan. Address Medicare enrollment around age 65 even if you plan to delay Social Security. Reassess the comparison if health, work, household, or tax facts change. When the choices are difficult or the tax effects are material, consider individualized help from a qualified tax or retirement-income professional.

Work and claiming are related, but they are not the same decision

SSA calculates retirement benefits using the highest 35 years of earnings. If your record has fewer than 35 years with earnings, or includes lower-earning years, those years can reduce the calculation. Continuing to work may add earnings years or replace lower years if your new earnings are higher. That can improve the benefit estimate, but the effect depends on your own work history. SSA explains this in its earnings-record and stopping-work guidance.

If you claim benefits and keep working before FRA, the annual earnings test may cause SSA to withhold some benefits when earnings exceed the applicable limit. For 2026, SSA lists a $24,480 limit for a beneficiary who is under FRA throughout the year. For someone reaching FRA in 2026, the limit is $65,160 for earnings before the month FRA is reached. These are 2026 figures, not permanent thresholds; check SSA’s current earnings-test guidance for the applicable year and your circumstances.

Do not confuse earnings-test withholding with the permanent reduction that comes from claiming before FRA. They are separate issues: one concerns benefits when you work while receiving them before FRA, and the other concerns the starting age used to calculate your monthly retirement benefit. If you expect to work, weigh both the possible effect of continued earnings on your record and any earnings-test exposure before choosing a start date.

How 401(k) and IRA withdrawals can affect Social Security taxes

Social Security benefits are not automatically tax-free, and they are not automatically all taxable. For federal income tax, the taxable portion depends on income and filing status. The IRS calculation includes half of your Social Security benefits plus other income; tax-exempt interest is included in that calculation. As a result, taking money from retirement savings can affect whether part of your benefits is taxable, even though the withdrawal is not itself a Social Security benefit.

For tax year 2025, IRS Publication 915 lists base amounts of $25,000 for many single filers and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly. Under specified circumstances, up to 85% of benefits may be taxable. These are federal-tax figures for the stated tax year, not a calculation of what you personally owe; filing status and other income matter, and thresholds and worksheets are tax-year dependent. Use the applicable IRS publication and worksheet rather than treating a threshold as a tax-free allowance or assuming the same result every year.

When comparing claim ages, estimate taxes using the same filing status and income assumptions for each option. A delay funded by withdrawals may change the tax picture in the delay years; later, a higher Social Security payment may change it again. The tax result depends on the mix and amount of income, so the gross benefit estimate alone is not enough to determine how much spendable income an option provides.

Check spouse, family, and Medicare rules before deciding

Your own retirement benefit may not be the only relevant Social Security benefit in the household. If you qualify for both your own retirement benefit and a spouse benefit, deemed-filing rules can affect how SSA treats your application. The rules vary by birth date. Divorced-spouse and other family eligibility may also matter, so check the rules that fit your household rather than assuming the decision is only about your individual estimate. SSA explains filing considerations on its retirement claiming page and in the options matrix.

Delaying Social Security does not eliminate the need to address Medicare. Plan for Medicare enrollment around age 65 even if your retirement benefit will start later. Use SSA’s options matrix to review the interaction and make sure the health coverage decision is handled on its own timeline.

Which circumstances can tilt the choice?

The factors below do not dictate a claiming age; they show where to focus your comparison. Treat them as prompts to test your own numbers, not as a substitute for them.

  • Waiting may be more workable when your household can cover its needs without exhausting savings, and a larger monthly benefit later is important to your plan. Check the required bridge withdrawals and their tax effects rather than assuming a larger future check makes the delay affordable.
  • Starting sooner may deserve consideration when current cash needs are difficult to meet from other resources, or your health and longevity assumptions make receiving income earlier more valuable to you. Neither circumstance produces a universal answer; compare the actual estimates and budget consequences.
  • More work may change the calculation if you have fewer than 35 earnings years or current earnings could replace lower years in SSA’s calculation. If you claim before FRA and continue working, separately check the applicable earnings test.
  • Household eligibility may change the best household plan if a spouse, divorced-spouse, or family benefit could be available, or if one person’s timing affects the other person’s options. Review the relevant filing rules before treating each decision as independent.
  • Taxes can change net income when savings withdrawals and Social Security overlap. Compare after-tax resources under tax-year-specific rules instead of comparing only the gross benefit amounts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing based only on account balances. Savings provide flexibility, but the balance alone does not show whether a delay is affordable or desirable. Match withdrawals to a realistic spending plan.
  • Assuming a larger later check guarantees a better outcome. The value of a larger monthly benefit depends on your circumstances and assumptions. Avoid relying on a break-even age that was calculated for someone else.
  • Using an average estimate instead of your SSA record. Work history affects the calculation. Review your earnings record and estimates at multiple starting ages.
  • Mixing up the earnings test and early-claim reduction. Withheld benefits related to working before FRA and the reduction for starting early are different provisions. Check which one applies to your situation.
  • Using old tax or earnings limits. The 2026 earnings limits and 2025 tax figures cited here are year-specific. Confirm the current values before making a decision or filing.
  • Forgetting Medicare or family rules. A delayed retirement claim does not itself handle Medicare enrollment, and an individual estimate does not capture every spouse or family option.
