If a contactless payment fails, check that both the card and reader support tap payments, then hold the card flat near the reader’s contactless symbol and follow its prompt. If tapping still fails, try inserting or swiping the card if the terminal permits it. A decline may be an account or authorization issue, not a broken card, so ask your card issuer to check. For a cracked or persistently unreliable card, request a replacement from the issuer; if the card is missing or you suspect unauthorized use, contact the issuer immediately.
First, work out whether the problem is the tap, the card, or the account
A failed tap is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It does not by itself prove that your account is blocked or that the entire card is unusable. A reader may not support contactless, the card may not be positioned where the reader can detect it, or the transaction may have been declined for an account or authorization reason. The available guidance does not establish one universal cause for contactless failure.

Use what happens next to decide what to do. If the same card works when inserted or swiped, the immediate payment problem may be limited to contactless acceptance, but that does not repair or confirm the health of the tap feature. If another payment method also fails or the terminal displays a decline, your issuer is best placed to check the transaction against your account. If the card is visibly split, cracked, or its contactless function continues to fail, ask the issuer about replacement rather than attempting a repair.
| What you observe | What to do next |
|---|---|
| The reader has no contactless symbol, or the card has no contactless indicator | Use a payment method the terminal accepts. Both card and terminal must support contactless. |
| The tap is not accepted, but the terminal offers chip or swipe | Try inserting or swiping the card if it is intact and the terminal allows it. Treat this as a fallback, not a fix for contactless. |
| The terminal declines the transaction | Check with the issuer, which can investigate the account-specific decline reason. |
| The card is cracked, split, or contactless remains unreliable | Ask the issuer to arrange a replacement. |
| The card is lost, stolen, or may have been used without your permission | Contact the issuer promptly to report the security problem. |
Try these checks when your credit card contactless is not working
1. Check that the card and terminal can both accept contactless
Look for the contactless indicator on the card and the contactless symbol on the payment reader. The feature requires both a compatible card and a compatible terminal. If either is missing, tapping is not an available option for that payment; use another method the terminal accepts instead.

2. Position the card at the reader’s symbol
Follow the terminal’s instructions and hold the card flat over the contactless symbol. The reader may be on, above, or below the screen, so do not assume that the screen itself is the tap point. Visa advises keeping the card near the reader for about a second, depending on the terminal. Wait for the terminal’s response before moving the card away, and follow any prompt it displays.
3. Try another accepted way to pay
If the tap is not accepted, insert the card or swipe it only if the terminal offers that method and the card is in usable condition. Visa says contactless Visa cards can also be inserted or swiped where those methods are available. This may let you complete a payment, but it does not establish that the contactless function is working again.
If the card is physically split or badly damaged, do not force it into a reader. Use another payment method if available and contact the issuer about replacing the card. A reader accepting a different method is not a reason to ignore visible damage or repeated tap failures.

A failed payment can have an account or authorization cause as well as a physical-card cause. If the terminal reports a decline, use your issuer’s app or contact the issuer and ask about that specific transaction. Visa says the issuer is best placed to identify a particular decline reason and advise how to complete the purchase. A different payment method may help you finish the checkout while the issuer checks, but it will not explain the decline by itself.

What to do if the card itself is damaged
Damage can affect the parts of a card needed for payment, and a visible problem is a reason to contact the issuer rather than try to repair the card. Visa’s damaged-card guidance gives worn card markings, a split card, and a damaged magnetic strip as examples of damage. It directs customers to request replacement through the issuer, not to modify the card themselves.
- Contact the card issuer. Use the issuer’s online banking or app, visit a branch if that service is available, or call the issuer. These are routes Visa identifies for requesting a damaged-card replacement; the options available to you depend on your issuer and market.
- Describe the damage and what still works. Explain whether the card is cracked or split, whether its markings or magnetic strip are damaged, and whether tapping, inserting, or swiping has failed. This helps the issuer understand what you are reporting; the issuer determines the replacement process.
- Ask what happens to payments while you wait. Confirm any replacement fee, delivery estimate, whether the current card remains usable, and whether a temporary digital card is available to you. These details vary by issuer and geography, so do not assume a universal cost, timetable, or temporary-access option.
- Follow the issuer’s instructions for the replacement. Ask whether you need to take any action when the new card arrives, such as activating it, and how to handle the damaged card. The precise process is issuer-specific.
A consumer repair kit, glue, or another attempt to alter the card cannot restore the issuer-managed payment credential in a reliable way. Replacement is controlled by the issuer. If emergency arrangements are needed, ask the issuer what it can offer; availability can vary.
What to do if the tap-to-pay feature stopped working but the card looks intact
Start with the terminal-and-card checks, try the correct positioning, and use chip or swipe if offered. If the card works through another method but tapping repeatedly fails, contact the issuer and describe the difference. The issuer can advise whether to replace the card; the available guidance does not establish a universal cause for a tap that stops working.

If the transaction was declined rather than simply not detected, ask the issuer to investigate the decline instead of assuming the card’s contactless component is at fault. Keep the payment details available when you contact the issuer, such as when the attempt happened and what the terminal displayed. Do not share your full card number or security information in an unsecured message; use contact channels provided by the issuer.

Using chip or swipe is only a practical fallback where the terminal accepts it and the card remains usable. It is not proof that a tap failure has been fixed. If the issue persists, ask the issuer about replacement and any available interim payment option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Act immediately if the card is lost, stolen, or potentially compromised
A missing card or suspected unauthorized transaction is a security issue, not just a damage or reader problem. Contact the issuer promptly using its app, phone number, or other official support route to report the card or activity and ask what action is needed. Mastercard’s U.S. guidance and Visa’s guidance likewise direct customers to contact the issuer for a lost card or suspected unauthorized use. Do not wait to see whether contactless works at another terminal.
Use the issuer’s own directions for reporting and any follow-up. The network guidance does not replace the procedures or protections that apply to your account in your country.
Replacement costs, timing, and temporary payments depend on your issuer
There is no universal replacement fee or delivery promise established here. Visa’s UK damaged-card guidance describes replacement through digital banking, a branch, or a phone call, while emergency arrangements can vary. Visa’s U.S. pages provide general contactless and issuer-support advice; Mastercard’s U.S. FAQ supports contacting the issuer for loss or suspected unauthorized activity. These network pages do not override the terms or procedures of your own card issuer.
Before relying on a temporary payment method, ask the issuer whether it supports one for your card and account. A phone wallet may be an option only when supported by the issuer, payment network, device, and market; it is not a guaranteed substitute for a replacement physical card. Ask for the issuer’s specific guidance rather than assuming a digital card will be available or that it can be added immediately.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- A failed tap means the whole account is blocked. Not necessarily; the issuer can investigate an account-specific decline.
- A successful chip or swipe transaction repairs contactless. It only shows that another accepted method worked for that payment.
- A phone wallet will always work as a temporary replacement. Availability depends on issuer, network, device, and market support.
- Every issuer replaces damaged cards on the same terms. The route, fee, delivery time, activation process, and interim options depend on the issuer and geography.
- A physical repair can restore the card’s payment function. Replacement guidance comes from the issuer, which controls the card credential.
