Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo update your credit card billing address after a move, contact the company that issued the card and follow its account-specific address-change process. There is no single national or card-network procedure. Your issuer’s instructions govern, and the change is not complete until the issuer confirms it has processed it. This guide covers the U.S. framework from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and two issuer agreements, and explains where the process differs from one issuer to another.
Start with the issuer, not the card network
Your Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover logo tells you who processes payments, but it does not tell you who controls your account record. The CFPB states the point plainly in its credit card contract definitions: “Your credit card contract is between you and your issuer.” The issuer is the bank or lender named in your agreement, and it is the party that can change the address tied to your account. A government change-of-address form, a postal forwarding order, or a change made with the card network will not, by itself, update the issuer’s records.
Find the issuer and its contact details
Look for the issuer’s name on the front or back of the card, or in the top section of your most recent statement. The statement is usually the most reliable source, because it shows the issuer’s current customer-service number and any account-specific address for notices. The CFPB’s credit card agreement database can help you locate the general agreement for a card, but the CFPB directs consumers to the issuing institution for account-specific information. Use the phone number or website printed on your own card or statement rather than a number found through a search engine.
Follow the issuer’s address-change steps
Each issuer decides how address changes are accepted. The two agreements reviewed for this guide show how different the channels can be:

| Issuer example (agreement reviewed) | Address-change channel described in that agreement | What to check on your own account |
|---|---|---|
| Citibank, N.A., Best Buy PL Online CMA | Notify customer service. The agreement directs the cardholder to customer service rather than a web form. | Confirm the customer-service number and whether your account offers an online address-change option. |
| UMB Bank, Visa Card with a Fixed APR | Written notice, online banking, or telephone, subject to the agreement’s instructions. | Confirm which of these channels your account accepts and whether the agreement specifies a mailing address for written notice. |
These two examples are not a survey of the market. Other issuers may accept changes only by phone, only online, or through a branch, and the current instructions for your card are the ones that matter. Use whichever channel your issuer names, and keep a record of the date and the method you used.
Know which address the issuer is updating
Many people assume that every address on a card account is the same. In practice, a card account can carry several address fields, and they do different jobs. The CFPB’s definition of “address on file” depends on the address supplied with the application and, in the circumstances the definition describes, on written notice the issuer has received and processed under the account terms. That definition applies when a contract uses the CFPB’s model definitions, so check your own agreement before assuming it governs your account.

Ask the issuer which address controls statements and account notices. Do not substitute a payment mailing address or a billing-dispute address for the account address without confirmation from the issuer. The CFPB’s guidance on fixing billing mistakes notes that the address for a billing dispute can differ from the payment address, so the address printed on a payment coupon is not necessarily the place to send a change of address or a dispute letter.
Confirm the change was processed
Once you have submitted the change, verify it. Sign in to the issuer’s account portal and check the profile or contact information, or call the number on your statement and ask the representative to confirm the address on file. Note the date, the name of the representative if you spoke to one, and any reference number you were given. The reviewed sources do not specify a universal confirmation method or a processing timeline, so if the address has not updated by the time the issuer said it would, call again rather than assuming the request went through.

Monitor the account during the move
A missed statement can lead to a late payment, so watch the account closely in the weeks around your move. Check that statements arrive at the new address, that the payment due date has not changed, and that alerts are going to an email or phone number you still use. Changing the billing address with the issuer does not automatically update other cards, bank accounts, utilities, merchants, or government records. Each of those needs its own update.

- No single address-change method, required form, or processing time applies to all U.S. card issuers. The examples above come from specific agreements.
- The CFPB’s address-on-file definition is conditional on the contract using those definitions. It should not be read as a universal rule.
- The sources reviewed are U.S.-focused. Cards issued outside the United States, or by institutions outside the CFPB’s scope, may follow different rules.
For the issuer-specific steps that control your account, the CFPB directs you to the institution itself, so the most reliable instructions are the ones printed in your own agreement or on your latest statement.
