The redesigned U.S. $100 bill entered circulation in 2013, not 2011 as first planned. The design was unveiled on April 21, 2010, and the Federal Reserve initially set February 10, 2011 as its planned issue date. Supply to financial institutions actually began on October 8, 2013.
When did the new $100 bill come out?
The U.S. government unveiled the redesigned $100 note on April 21, 2010. The Federal Reserve’s announcement at the time named February 10, 2011 as the planned issue date, but that was not when the new notes reached financial institutions. The Federal Reserve began supplying them on October 8, 2013. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) currently classifies the design as “Issued 2013 – Present.”
What changed on the redesigned note?
The most recognizable additions are the blue 3-D Security Ribbon and a color-shifting bell in an inkwell. They were introduced as security features to help deter counterfeiting and help people distinguish genuine notes. The Federal Reserve cited counterfeit threats and the international circulation of $100 bills as reasons for continuing to improve the note’s security.

At the 2010 unveiling, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said: “This global public education program is crucial to the successful introduction of the new $100 note, because a well-informed public is our first and best line of defense against counterfeiting.”
Is an older $100 bill still valid?
Yes. Older U.S. notes were not made invalid by the redesign. The BEP says all U.S. currency remains legal tender regardless of when it was issued. The redesign added security features; it did not cancel earlier $100 notes.

How common is counterfeiting?
In its 2010 announcement, the Federal Reserve Board reported that counterfeit currency represented less than 1/100th of one percent of the value of U.S. currency in circulation. That is a historical figure reported in 2010, not a current counterfeit rate.

No such conclusion follows from the announcement. On March 26, 2026, the Treasury Department said the president’s signature would appear on future U.S. paper currency alongside the Treasury Secretary’s. That is separate from the security redesign issued in 2013 and does not establish that a new anti-counterfeiting $100 design has entered circulation.
