Apple announced its new Munich office on 10 March 2021, but it did not plan to move in that year. The company said it expected to begin moving into the Karlstrasse facility in late 2022. By March 2023, Apple described the site as recently opened, without giving an exact opening date.

What the Karlstrasse facility was for
Apple said the 30,000-square-meter facility in central Munich would house its growing cellular unit and support engineering in mobile wireless semiconductors, software, 5G and future wireless technologies, including wireless modems. It was one part of Apple’s broader Munich engineering presence, rather than the start of the company’s work in the city.

In its 2021 announcement, Apple said its Munich engineering hub included close to 1,500 engineers from 40 countries. The company also said it had more than 4,000 team members across Germany at that time, spanning roles such as retail, engineering and operations.

What Apple announced about investment
Apple said it planned to invest more than €1 billion in Munich expansion and research and development over the following three years. That was a forward-looking commitment announced in 2021; the announcement does not establish the final amount spent. Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the time: “Munich has been a home to Apple for four decades, and we’re grateful to this community and to Germany for being a part of our journey.”

What changed after the opening
In its March 2023 update, Apple announced three additional sites across the street from the Karlstrasse facility. That expansion came after the original 2021 announcement and should be distinguished from the Karlstrasse office itself. The company update describes the facility as recently opened but does not establish current occupancy or provide an exact opening date.
