On June 19, 2015, Honeywell Aerospace was named to supply a TPE331-12B turboprop engine for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s HTT-40 military trainer prototype. The announcement concerned the aircraft’s propulsion—not the design or manufacture of the whole aircraft, which remained HAL’s project. HAL’s current HTT-40 product page still lists the TPE331-12B.
What the 2015 announcement covered
The announcement identified Honeywell as the engine supplier for HAL’s HTT-40, or Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40. It was a prototype-engine selection: the available announcement did not specify a contract value, engine quantity, delivery schedule, or a production commitment. It therefore should not be read as a finalized Indian Air Force fleet contract or proof of operational induction. Indian Defence Review’s June 19, 2015 report described Honeywell’s engine as intended to support demonstration of the aircraft.

What the HTT-40 is designed to do
HAL describes the HTT-40 as an ab-initio trainer: an aircraft for the early stages of pilot instruction. It is a tandem-seat, fully aerobatic aircraft designed for primary training, rather than a frontline fighter or advanced jet trainer. Its intended training work includes basic flying, aerobatics, instrument flying, navigation, night flying and close formation. HAL also highlights low-speed handling as a training feature.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe listed equipment includes an air-conditioned cockpit, modern avionics, hot refueling, quick pilot changeover and zero-zero ejection seats. HAL identifies a glass cockpit, VOR-ILS, TACAN, radio altimeter, IFF and an Integrated Standby Instrument System (ISIS). A single-piece canopy is intended to give both pilots all-round visibility, and HAL says the airframe uses light alloys and composites. These are training and cockpit features, not evidence that the aircraft is a combat platform.

HAL’s product page says the aircraft is designed for certification to FAR-23, a civil aircraft certification standard. That reference should not be confused with military qualification or operational clearance.
Why use a turboprop for a basic trainer?
A turboprop is a practical fit for repeated early-stage instruction: it can be more economical to operate than a jet while providing the performance needed for climb, aerobatics, navigation and formation exercises. Those are general operational reasons for the aircraft-engine pairing, not independently measured results from the HTT-40 program.

The 2015 announcement emphasized rapid acceleration, short-takeoff capability, climb performance, efficient cruise, low fuel consumption, reliability and training versatility as benefits of the TPE331-12B. These were stated benefits, not published independent test findings for the HTT-40. The value of any trainer also depends on the broader training system—aircraft availability, maintenance, spare parts, instructors, simulators and syllabus integration—not just engine performance.
Engine power and published aircraft figures
HAL lists the HTT-40’s engine power as 1,100 shaft horsepower (shp). Honeywell’s broader TPE331 documentation describes the TPE331-12 model as having 1,160 thermodynamic shaft horsepower and a 1,100-horsepower flat-rate torque takeoff rating. Those family-document figures are not a reason to substitute a different figure for the HTT-40 installation: the aircraft-specific product page gives 1,100 shp.

What Honeywell’s TPE331 record tells—and does not tell—readers
The TPE331 is an established engine family. The 2015 report said more than 13,000 had been delivered and the family had accumulated more than 122 million flight hours at that time. Honeywell reported more than 125 million family flight hours and over 13,000 engines delivered by October 2017. Its November 2023 brochure gives a later family-level figure of more than 14,700 engines delivered and more than 125 million flight hours.

These are family-wide figures, not HTT-40 fleet statistics. They provide context about the engine family’s history, but they do not prove the reliability, availability or maintenance performance of TPE331-12B engines installed on HTT-40s. Honeywell’s brochure also lists hot-section intervals of 2,500 or 3,500 hours and overhaul intervals of 5,000 or 7,000 hours for specified commercial-operator configurations; those figures should not be transferred automatically to the military HTT-40 installation.
How the choice fits HAL’s industrial context
The HTT-40 represented HAL’s aircraft-development effort paired with a foreign-origin propulsion system. That combination is not contradictory: domestic airframe design and production can coexist with imported or foreign-supplied components. Choosing a mature engine can offer a new aircraft program an established technical and support base, while leaving questions of local content and long-term engine support distinct from the aircraft’s design origin.

A contemporaneous aviation-industry report described Honeywell’s relationship with HAL as extending back more than four decades, including work involving TPE331 engines. It also reported that TPE331 engines powered Dornier 228 aircraft manufactured by HAL. This is a historical industry account, not a current program-status statement. Aviation Defence Universe’s report provides that relationship context.
Quick Recap
What the engine selection did not establish
- It did not make Honeywell the designer or manufacturer of the complete HTT-40; HAL remained responsible for the aircraft.
- The announcement did not disclose contract value, engine quantity, delivery dates, warranty terms or the scope of any production-engine commitment.
- It did not establish a final fleet size, service-entry date, operational status or future aircraft configuration.
- It did not independently validate the reported fuel-efficiency, acceleration, reliability or training benefits for the HTT-40.
- HAL’s current product page confirms that the listed aircraft configuration uses the TPE331-12B, but does not by itself establish fleet readiness, production rate or procurement status.
