For U.S. federal individual income taxes, pay any balance due by the return’s filing deadline—even if you request an extension to file. During the year, taxes are generally paid through paycheck withholding or estimated payments. If you cannot pay the full balance on time, pay what you can by the deadline and consider an IRS payment plan.

When do you pay federal income taxes?

Balance due with your annual return

Any remaining tax due on your individual federal return is due by the filing deadline. An extension gives you more time to file the return, not more time to pay. The IRS identifies April 15, 2026, as the deadline for 2025 individual returns; check the IRS calendar for the tax year you are filing rather than assuming the same date applies every year. IRS: Pay taxes on time

During the year: withholding or estimated payments

Federal income tax is generally paid as income is earned. Employees can use payroll withholding, and a wage earner who expects withholding to fall short may ask their employer to withhold more. Estimated payments are generally used for income not covered by withholding, including some self-employment income and self-employment tax. IRS: Estimated tax FAQ

When are estimated tax payments due?

The general individual estimated-tax schedule follows four income periods. The dates below are standard due dates; check the instructions for the applicable tax year and your circumstances.

April 1–May 31 June 15

The schedule may differ for fiscal-year taxpayers, farmers and fishers, people whose income begins later in the year, and other special cases. IRS Publication 505 (2026): Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax

Who generally needs to make estimated payments?

Individuals, sole proprietors, partners, and S corporation shareholders generally need to make estimated payments if they expect to owe at least $1,000 when filing. This is a general threshold, not a personalized calculation. The Form 1040-ES worksheet and Publication 505 explain the detailed rules and exceptions; wage earners may be able to increase withholding instead. IRS: Estimated taxes

Estimated tax is paid by installment dates. Paying late or paying too little by an installment date can lead to an underpayment penalty, even if you later pay the full amount with your return. The IRS explains the rules and calculation on its underpayment of estimated tax page.

How can you pay?

The IRS lists online-account payments, Direct Pay, phone or mobile options, and mailed estimated payments. E-file software generally offers payment options during electronic filing. The right method depends on whether you are paying a return balance or an estimated installment, and on the applicable deadline.

  1. Identify the payment. Confirm the tax year and payment type—such as a balance due or an estimated-tax installment—before submitting it.
  2. Choose an available method. Use an IRS online option, phone or mobile option, e-file payment option, or mail an estimated payment as applicable. Check the IRS instructions for the method and timing.
  3. Keep proof. Save the confirmation for an electronic payment or records showing when and how a mailed payment was sent. The IRS Online Account can provide payment history and tax records.

For calculating estimated payments, use Form 1040-ES and Publication 505. A tax professional can help apply the rules to your income and circumstances. Payment processing terms may vary by method; check the selected provider’s current terms for any fees or timing details. IRS Publication 505

What if you cannot pay the full amount?

Pay as much as you can by the due date, then look into an IRS payment plan. The IRS encourages full payment; penalties and interest may continue to accrue on an unpaid balance until it is paid. Payment-plan availability and terms depend on your situation. IRS: Pay taxes on time
