Pay depends heavily on specialty, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes wage data for occupations as a whole, not a year-by-year path for any one person. The useful approach is to identify your exact engineering occupation, then read where pay falls within that occupation’s wage distribution as your experience and responsibilities grow.
Why engineers don’t share one salary ladder
“Engineer” covers many distinct occupations, and BLS wage estimates differ materially between them. The gap between the lowest and highest specialty median is large enough that an average across all engineers would describe almost nobody’s actual pay.
| Occupation (BLS category) | Annual median wage | Data period |
|---|---|---|
| Agricultural engineers | $84,630 | 2024 annual figure |
| Civil engineers | $100,840 | May 2025 |
| Industrial engineers | $102,440 | May 2025 |
| Mechanical engineers | $104,110 | May 2025 |
| Electrical engineers | $120,630 | May 2025 |
| Computer hardware engineers | $155,020 | 2024 annual figure |
The 2024 and May 2025 figures come from different BLS releases, so do not read the gap between a 2024 row and a May 2025 row as one year of raises. All of these are U.S. national occupation-wide medians. They are nominal annual wages, and they do not include bonuses, equity, or benefits.
What a median and a percentile actually tell you
A median is the midpoint of everyone employed in an occupation: half earn more, half earn less. It is not a starting salary, a guaranteed raise, or a ceiling. Wage percentiles show the spread around that midpoint.

- Used Book in Good Condition
BLS salary negotiation guidance puts it this way in its page “How much could I be earning? Using Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data during salary negotiations”: “Someone new to the field may expect wages near the 10th or 25th percentile, whereas those with more experience and education could expect wages near the 75th or 90th percentile.”
That is a useful orientation, not a schedule. BLS data show where workers in an occupation are positioned, but they do not establish that every engineer moves up the distribution at a fixed pace or reaches the upper percentiles after a set number of years.

A worked example: civil engineering
In BLS’s May 2025 estimates, the civil engineer median is $100,840. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $68,240, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $163,220. A civil engineer in their first job and a senior engineer ten years later may both sit anywhere across that range, depending on the factors below.
The width of that range is the main lesson. Within one specialty, the difference between a low and high percentile can be more than $90,000 a year, which is far larger than the typical gap between a median and a nearby percentile.

What moves you along the distribution
BLS notes that experience and education affect where workers fall within an occupation’s wage distribution. Beyond those two factors, four variables usually change a fair comparison:
- Specialty: the occupation definition matters most, as the table above shows.
- Geography: BLS publishes wage data by state and metropolitan area. A regional figure is more relevant to your offer than the national median.
- Industry: BLS also publishes industry-level wage data, so the same title can pay differently in different sectors.
- Role scope: the responsibilities attached to a job, not just the title, shape where it sits in the distribution.
Does moving into management raise pay?
Leadership roles can change both responsibilities and pay, but the BLS material does not quantify a general promotion premium for engineers. In its civil engineering profile, BLS says some Professional Engineers advance to supervisory or administrative positions with experience, and that graduate education and a Professional Engineer (PE) license may help with that advancement. That is one documented path in civil engineering, not a requirement or guarantee in every field.

If you are comparing a technical individual-contributor role with a management track, compare the role scope, the advancement requirements, and the cash pay together. A higher title does not automatically mean a higher position in the wage distribution.
How to make a fair comparison
- Pick the exact BLS occupation that matches your work, not the broad “engineers” grouping. BLS also reports a broader architecture and engineering group, with a May 2025 median of $99,520, and a grouping labeled “engineers” in its civil and industrial profile tables with a May 2025 median of $108,620. These are different categories and should not be swapped.
- Check the state or metro area where the job is located, using BLS occupational data for that geography.
- Check the industry if the employer is in a specific sector.
- Match the data year. Compare May 2025 figures with May 2025 figures, and label older 2024 figures as such.
- Locate your offer within the 10th to 90th percentile range, then ask whether your experience, education, and role scope put you above or below the median.
What the data cannot tell you
Wage distributions do not give an individual salary curve. They cannot show how fast a particular engineer will progress, how an employer will respond to a raise request, or what bonuses and equity might add. For a precise forecast, you would need your specialty, location, industry, and career level, then current local wage data segmented by experience. Without those inputs, any single “typical” number overstates what the evidence supports.

For salary negotiation prep, BLS’s own guidance makes the same point: “Understanding how wages and wage distributions vary by occupation, industry, and location is invaluable information when negotiating a starting salary or requesting a raise at your current job.”
