Temu’s “free” items are usually conditional promotions, not unconditional giveaways. To qualify, you may have to invite people, share, check in repeatedly, meet a spending or shipping condition, or finish before a deadline. The item’s price may be zero while the offer still costs you time, attention, referrals, a purchase, or personal information.
How Temu’s free-item offers work
Temu combines low headline prices with gamified promotions such as games, spin wheels, and coupons. The reward screen is an offer: its specific eligibility rules determine whether you receive an item or another benefit. Those rules can vary, so there is no reliable universal minimum spend, completion rate, or probability of getting a particular item established by the sources cited here.

Also check what the promotion calls a reward. It could be a product, coupon, credit, rebate, or discount on a later order. A coupon or credit is not the same as cash or a no-strings-attached item; its usefulness may depend on making another purchase.
What to check before you participate
Read the full offer details before inviting anyone, adding products to your cart, or starting a countdown. Check these conditions together, since satisfying one does not necessarily satisfy the others:

- Required actions: Does the offer require referrals, sharing, account creation, repeated check-ins, or a purchase?
- Spending and shipping: Is there a minimum order, a shipping charge, or a cart total that changes as you proceed?
- Time limits: Is there an expiry timer, a daily-progress reset, or another deadline?
- Reward terms: Is the benefit an item, a coupon, credit, a rebate, or a discount for a future order? Check any restrictions on using it.
- Product and seller details: Look for the seller’s identity, an accurate product description, return information, and available safety details.
- Information requested: Notice which permissions or personal details the promotion asks for and whether you are comfortable providing them.
Keep a screenshot of the offer and its terms before you commit. If the rules are unclear or the progress display changes, the screenshot gives you a record of what you saw; it does not guarantee that you will qualify.
Is there a data cost?
Temu’s privacy policy, updated February 11, 2026, says the company collects information when users take part in contests, promotions, surveys, and similar activities, and uses personal information to facilitate promotions. That is a concrete reason to treat participation as an exchange beyond the listed item price. Review the policy and the information requested in the specific flow rather than assuming that a “free” offer requires no data.

The Texas Attorney General has alleged deceptive marketing and illegal data harvesting in litigation against Temu. Those are allegations, not established findings. For what Temu says it collects and how it uses information, its own privacy policy is the relevant company statement.
What regulators have said about Temu promotions
U.S. seller disclosures and reporting tools
In September 2025, the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice announced a $2 million civil penalty and injunction resolving alleged violations of the INFORM Consumers Act by Whaleco, Inc., Temu’s operator. The complaint concerned seller disclosures and reporting mechanisms that were missing or difficult to find in some cases, including in gamified shopping experiences. The stipulated order requires seller-identification disclosures and electronic and telephone reporting mechanisms.

The action is relevant when checking who is selling a promoted product and how to report a concern. It does not establish that every Temu promotion is unlawful. The FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection director described the Act’s purpose as giving consumers information and tools to report suspicious activity and, in many cases, identify and contact high-volume third-party sellers.
European consumer-protection scrutiny
The European Commission says the EU Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) network notified Temu in November 2024 of practices it considered in breach of EU consumer law. In a July 28, 2025 release, the Commission said its investigation continued into suspected breaches that included addictive design features, recommendation-system transparency, and researcher access to data. These are statements about regulatory concerns and ongoing work, not proof that every promotion is unlawful.

When a “free” item may not be worth it
Compare the offer with an ordinary discount by looking at the whole exchange, not just the displayed item price. Consider your out-of-pocket total, the time and actions required, information requested, seller transparency, product and return details, and whether the reward can be used like money or only toward a later purchase.

A reward that depends on another order may be less valuable than a straightforward discount on something you already intended to buy.

How to decide before you tap
- Read the complete rules and identify every required action, deadline, purchase, and shipping condition.
- Work out the total you would actually pay, including any extra order needed to use a coupon or credit.
- Check the product and seller information, return terms, and reporting options before treating the item as a worthwhile reward.
- Consider what information and permissions participation involves.
- Save a screenshot of the offer, and stop if its conditions are unclear or would lead you to spend beyond your budget.
If seller or promotion information is missing, use the marketplace’s reporting channels and appropriate consumer-protection channels rather than relying on a reward screen alone.
